A sound board to take me back to summer 2015

Looking Back feels like a little projection of all the memories from 11 years ago, wrapped up in a 3 and a half minute song

Luckily that summer I took a lot photos. Scenes from Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, somewhere in Northern California…

I wanted to create a strong story board with as few musical components as possible

Looking Back was one of those tunes that formed harmonically much quicker than the final pulse of it did.

The chorus came pretty quickly, but the verse actually took much longer to finally settle in. I’ve learned that the right fit as simple as it may be, doesn’t always correlate with the amount of TIME it sometimes takes to find that right fit.

I wanted Looking Back to feel optimistic and yearning

My favorite part of orchestrating the 𝑰𝑵 𝑫𝑹𝑬𝑨𝑴𝑺 single was playing with filters and synthesis. Like how much can I SOFTEN the edges of some of these parts? What if there’s more sharpness on the front end of the sound while the back end has a softened quality? Featuring some incredible moments by @nickcampbelldestroys and @anthonyfungmusic 👀 by @willbrahm

I wanted 𝑨𝑴𝑬𝑵𝑫𝑺 to create an immediately clear and immersive melody, that totally grabs hold of you in the first three notes. One of the coolest things in recording this song was creating the “invisible” orchestration to SURROUND this delicate melody like a little glowing halo, more felt than heard. 𝑨𝑴𝑬𝑵𝑫𝑺 is like a little soundtrack to trigger all of your nostalgia, and you can just press PLAY on those memories again and again and again. That’s what I look for in the music that hits me the hardest.

Thank you @anthonyfungmusic and @nickcampbelldestroys for making this music 3 dimensional!

I wanted to create an atmosphere that hit immediately. I wanted the melody to feel elastic and delicate, while also angsty. I wanted the riff to feel literally addictive under the fingers to play. I wanted the melody to be crystal clear and to hammer the chorus theme home, literally spanning three octaves by the end. And thanks to @anthonyfungmusic and @nickcampbelldestroys , I think we did just that! I bet you can’t listen just once.

Los Angeles guitarist and composer Will Brahm brings a cinematic and deeply expressive approach to modern jazz. Evoking the melodic freedom of Jeff Beck and the lush harmonic landscapes of the Pat Metheny Group, Brahm uses the Stratocaster to create a distinctive sonic world filled with color, atmosphere, and inspired improvisation.

Brahm tours internationally with 10-time Grammy Award-winning trumpet legend Arturo Sandoval, performing on stages around the world while continuing to develop his own voice as a bandleader and composer. His 2024 album, Distance to Empty, showcased his expansive musical vision, with his next studio project, Trust, arriving in 2026.

At The Den, Will Brahm brings that artistry into an intimate setting for an evening of melodic storytelling, adventurous guitar, and beautifully textured modern jazz. by @willbrahm
