Keep the Train Whistle Blowing 🚂

For my final post on the Kaymoor Mine, we make our way down to the lower level. Besides the now-famous New River, this is where the coal was refined, loaded onto rail cars, and sent north to Virginia. The photos show just how far that journey really was — the long stairs dropping from the bench level to the river, the old railroad switch that once shifted cars from one track to another, and the last traces of the stone refinery still holding on after a century of weather and silence.

Standing here, you can almost imagine the place alive again — the noise, the heat, the constant movement. It took incredible strength to work in a mine like Kaymoor. It was dangerous, exhausting, and unforgiving, yet thousands of men and families built their lives around this mountainside. Their labor fueled towns, industries, and the growth of an entire region. They helped build this country in ways that are easy to overlook today, and they deserve to be remembered.

And even though the mine is gone, the trains haven’t completely left this place behind. Every day, you can still hear a whistle echo through the gorge as the line runs past the old site — no longer stopping for pickups, but still following the same path carved out by the generations who worked here.

As this series comes to a close, I’m glad I took the time to share a small piece of their story. Places like Kaymoor deserve more than to fade quietly into the hills. And the people who lived and worked here deserve to have their stories kept alive — to keep the train whistle blowing, even if only in memory.

The Incline ⛰️🚂

This isn’t the absolute best picture I’ve ever taken, but it continues the story of the Kaymoor Mine in West Virginia.

Yesterday I talked about the existence of the mine. Today, with this picture, I wanted to give you a first glimpse of what life looked like here. The first obvious fact you can pull from this image is simple: the mine was not a safe place. Kaymoor was built on three distinct levels, separated by a staggering 2,200-foot incline between the top of the operation and the railroad tracks running along the river below. These sections were tied together by a rail system known as the haulage — the lifeline of the entire mountain.

In this photo, you’re looking at the bench level. This is where the hoist house stands — essentially the heart of Kaymoor. The haulage cars here carried miners, their families, equipment, and tons of coal straight up and down the mountainside. ⚒️

At the very top of the incline, housing and a company store were provided for miners and their families. The bench level contained the hoist house and central mining operation. Down at the bottom, along the river, more housing, another company store, the school, churches, and the processing plant filled out the lowest tier of the community.

But with all of this came real danger — and a heavy human cost. The haulage system that held Kaymoor together was also responsible for multiple deaths over the years. Cars broke loose. Cables snapped. Workers were crushed or thrown from the steep incline. For many families, the sound of the hoist wasn’t just the rhythm of daily life — it was a reminder that no one’s return home was ever guaranteed. ⚠️

And yet, despite the danger, this mountainside town thrived for decades. Tomorrow, I’ll share a little more about the people who lived here, and what daily life looked like clinging to the side of a mountain…

Rails of Change 🚂

This post — and its title — warrant a little explanation. The photo you see here captures a section of an abandoned railroad line in West Virginia. Once, these rails carried coal from the base of the Kaymoor Mine — a bustling operation carved into the side of a mountain high above the New River Gorge — up the New River to Virginia, where it fueled the furnaces of the Low Moor Iron Company.

As technology advanced and demand shifted, places like Kaymoor slowly faded. The mine closed in 1926, leaving behind only the remnants of a town that once thrived — a quiet reminder of a different era.
