Bench Portraits: The Shared Seat

Most people see a table or a bench as exactly what it is. Others might appreciate it from a design perspective, recognising its form, materials, or aesthetic qualities. Photographers, however, often see something different. A bench can become a visually powerful subject, a compositional anchor that introduces many of the fundamental elements of photography like lines, structure, texture, symmetry, balance, and negative space.

For me, a bench encompasses all of those things, but it has always meant something more.

I’ve always thought deeply about this, but putting it into written words has been difficult. I first drafted the title Bench Portraits in like early 2025, and now feels like the right time to finally piece it together because I’ve gotten my hero shot.

Why is a bench important to me?

A chair is designed for the individual. A bench is designed for company.

It is inherently shared. Its open form encourages movement, conversation, and moments experienced side by side. The design itself is simple and understated, yet when placed within the context of like a crowded room, or a public space, it quietly changes the way people gather. Unlike individual seating, a bench removes boundaries. It invites closeness without demanding it, creating space for connection, and conversations that feel more natural… or most comfortablest for me… when you’re sitting beside someone rather than across from them.

In moments like this, value shifts, what feels ordinary becomes a quiet kind of luxury, measured in time and presence.

For me it is the perfect seat for all of those reasons…it’s intimate and perhaps to be honest…it allows you to avoid direct eye contact.

For this personal story, it’s not complete, but the feeling matters more than perfection. The search for the right cafe to tell this continues or wherever the bench may be. There’s still one more to share it with, and many more to share it with.

and I think to end it all… in a wireless world, there are still moments that feel better with a pair of wired earphones.

Behind Every Great Look Is A Great Power Piece.

Issue #1 of my collab with @firmoo_optical made the front page — literally. The first set was well received apparently, and now I’m back with another cover moment, Issue #2. Proof that if you want to be on the front cover… you can create it.

I’ve actually never owned sunglasses before. I was always on the fence — until Firmoo reached out. The S23850 frame stood out for me. I’d been wanting something with a 70–80% brown-orange tint, not too dark, still allows eye contact, but with just the right amount of shade for bright light.

They’re fully prescription-ready, comfortable enough to wear all day, and add a sharp, dynamic edge to any look. I always saw celebrities wearing this colour combo and wondered if it would suit me.

So here’s the set, I think it looks cool and hopefully it shows that great frames don’t need to be expensive, and that style isn’t about price. Even the simplest pieces can be elevated with presence and power.

If you’re anyone is curious or wanna try them for yourself, use code ZFCJ50 for an exclusive discount.

The Elegance of Everyday Frames

For the longest time, I just saw glasses as something practical—something you needed, not something you’d really choose.

But ever since I replaced my old pair, I’ve started paying a lot more attention. Frames can completely change the way your face looks—they shape, define, soften, sharpen. It’s a detail I overlooked for years, but one I’ve grown to genuinely consider and appreciate now.

This pair from Firmoo has probably been the best fit for me so far. It’s simple, balanced and stays put.

Price is usually the first thing we look at, and with these, it’s far more affordable than what you’d find on the high street. As for quality—the hinges move smoothly, the weight sits comfortably, and the lenses are sharp.

What I’ve done with these portraits is show both—with and without the frames. Personally the difference is huge, there are even moments when I look at that photo without the glasses, who I see feels strangely distant.

These have honestly been solid. Worth a try if you’re on the lookout for new frames.

Shoutout to @firmoo_uk for letting me pass this along.

ZFCJ50 gets you 50% off frames and 20% off lenses, if you’re curious. (frame model: AC17009)

When the packaging deserves its own moment.

Fun, colourful packaging will always get my attention, and the Special Delivery Box is a great example of why. I picked this up back in July, and it finally arrived the other day. After the wait, it’s safe to say the presentation and the items did not disappoint 👀

30 years of Pikachu.

Old memories, in a new card. From childhood with love.

Maybe once I have all 30 of these all collected, I’ll do something fun but until then.

One frame makes it look quiet and cinematic. One turn says otherwise. It’s all just perspective.

Slower shutter, softer moments — mobile photography

Motion blur is such a great way to add a little more character to photos. It’s one of my favourite things to play around with, and I may have covered it before with a camera, but I’ve never really explored it with an iPhone. It can be difficult to get the perfect shot… and by “perfect”, I don’t mean perfectly sharp, but getting the movement of your surroundings or subject to feel just right

This is an in camera body process without the need of additional software to recreate however, this is difficult to achieve with the iPhone. Especially mine at the 14 Pro Max.

@sandmarc shared their Hybrid ND/PL filter that comes in 3 strengths:

ND16 Filter (ND16/PL) - 4 Stops - Cloudy Days
ND32 Filter (ND32/PL) - 5 Stops - Mild Cloudy Days
ND64 Filter (ND64/PL) - 6 Stops - Sunny Days (Summer)
Phone Clip Mount

Controls for photos: 1/15SS - 1.8F - 50-320ISO

During my shoot, I used the ND64 as the weather kept switching between sunny and cloudy. Paired with the Sandmarc app, which gives you more advanced camera controls, it lets you achieve natural motion blur in-camera. Without an ND filter, slowing the shutter would make the image far too bright, especially with the native camera app’s limited controls. Think of the filter as putting a pair of sunglasses over your lens.

This clip attachment is such a great tool, and it has great compatibility all the way up to the latest iPhone 18. It also pairs really well with the newer iPhone specs if you’re looking to add an accessory to your setup. If you’re only going to start with one mobile accessory especially for photography, I’d choose this over an additional attachment lens all day, because it can make such a noticeable difference and helps tremendously with achieving this kind of shot and add more depth to your story in my opinion.

GENTLE MONSTER — THE GENTLENESS BEHIND BOLDNESS

Issue #3

A pair I don’t reach for often, yet one that has always deserved its own moment.

After my recent pair from another brand broke, I found myself returning to these, looking at them differently, beyond their function and towards the character they carry.

They may not have the same presence as some of Gentle Monster’s more provocative designs seen throughout their campaigns, but that restraint is what makes this pair interesting. Balanced in silhouette, softer in character and effortless to wear, they offer a more understated interpretation of what boldness can be.

For me, and in terms of what I wear, this is about as bold as it gets.

It did inspire me to pick up the camera again, check off another thing on the list and draw inspiration from Gentle Monster’s campaigns and collaborations, embracing the simplicity of their designs and visual language. While many of their campaigns place the human portrait at the centre of the frame, for this issue, I wanted to step away from that and, for a few reasons, remain behind the camera.

Instead allowing the glasses themselves to become the subject.

Swipe to the end to see me as a giant head in their flagship stores… I thought that was pretty funny 👀
