A little look behind the scenes at some of the steps I use to bring an astrophotography image to life - from the raw stacked data to the final Chamaeleon Cloud.

What initially looks like an empty void slowly reveals one of the most beautiful dark nebulae in the southern sky.

No generative AI was used in the processing of this image.

Nebula & star animation at the end created in Adobe After Effects. ✨

🌌 ONCE UPON A TIME… AND BEYOND 🌌

Some images feel like the end of a project once they are finished. Others keep telling you that there is still more of the story waiting to be told.

“Once Upon a Time” belonged to the second kind.

That image explored a wide region of Cepheus dominated by the Flying Bat Nebula (Sh2-129) and the incredibly faint Giant Squid Nebula (Ou4), and brought me one of the greatest satisfactions of my astrophotography journey: winning the Deep Sky category at European AstroFest 2025. 🏆

But apparently, that story wasn't over yet.

This time, I decided to go beyond. ✨

Almost 7° of sky, turning the subjects of the original image into pieces of a much larger celestial landscape.

🔴 Sh2-129 — Flying Bat Nebula
🦑 Ou4 — Giant Squid Nebula
🌑 Barnard 150 — Seahorse Nebula
🎆 NGC 6946 — Fireworks Galaxy
✨ NGC 6939 — Open Cluster
⭐ Alderamin (α Cephei)
⭐ Eta Cephei (η Cephei)

Emission nebulae, incredibly faint OIII, molecular clouds, dark nebulae, Galactic dust, thousands of stars, an open cluster and an entire external galaxy.

All in the same field of view.

📷 THE PROJECT

⏱️ 114h 05m total integration
🔭 2× William Optics UltraCat 56
📷 2× ZWO ASI6200MM
🌌 Dual imaging setup

The data were collected under two different skies:

🏔️ 26 hours of broadband from the beautiful dark skies of Forca Canapine, during our Sibillini AstroFest 2026

🏠 The remaining narrowband data from my home observatory in Acquaviva Picena, Italy

In the end, it took 114 hours and 5 minutes, two telescopes, two cameras, two locations and quite a few hours in front of PixInsight to return to the same sky where this story began.

Only this time, I decided to look a little farther.

🌌 Once Upon a Time… and Beyond.

I hope you enjoy the journey.

Clear skies everyone! ✨🔭 taken in Forca Canapine by @williamoptics

At times the brightness of the stars hide some minor details in galaxies and nebulas. I used a program to remove the stars from some of my favorite DSOs using my two favorite telescopes. The Sharpstar 15028HNT astrograph and the William Optics Spacecat51 both running the ZWO 26mp camera and specialized filters. Hope you enjoy. Below is a list of the DSO's and equipment used. Shadow Wings on Fire – The Cosmic Bat (LDN 43)

Swipe for more.

Stretching its wings across the rich star fields of Ophiuchus, LDN 43 is a dense molecular cloud better known as the Cosmic Bat Nebula. Its dark silhouette is shaped by thick interstellar dust, while faint surrounding H-alpha emission gives parts of the field an almost fiery glow.

This was one of the more challenging images I’ve processed, particularly balancing the extremely faint dust, reflection nebulosity and H-alpha signal without pushing the data too far. After a lot of experimenting, this is the version I felt best preserved the subtle structure of the region.

Figthing Dragons

LDN 1228, LBN 550, LBN 552, LBN 555 and Cohen 129

This is my latest work and the smaller of the two projects I had planned to capture during the Sibillini AstroFest 2026.

The image was acquired using a William Optics UltraCat 76 and a ZWO ASI2600MM Pro, with 38 × 300-second exposures in luminance and 40 × 300-second exposures for each RGB channel. The total integration time is therefore 13 hours and 10 minutes, divided as follows:

Luminance: 3 hours 10 minutes
Red: 3 hours 20 minutes
Green: 3 hours 20 minutes
Blue: 3 hours 20 minutes

This is a relatively short integration compared with my usual standards. A few setup issues and rather unpredictable weather prevented me from collecting as much signal as I had originally planned. Once again, however, the excellent sky above Forca Canapine made a real difference, providing clean and deep data that allowed me to process these extremely faint dust clouds with relative ease.

This field lies in the constellation of Cepheus, within the vast molecular-cloud complex known as the Cepheus Flare. Its main features are LDN 1228 and LBN 552, whose shapes resemble two dragons facing one another, giving the region its informal name: “The Fighting Dragons of Cepheus.” The wide field also includes the faint diffuse nebulae LBN 550 and LBN 555.

Among the dust clouds, the small yellow-orange reflection nebula Cohen 129 can also be seen. It is catalogued as RNO 129 and GN 21.00.4 and is a compact star-forming region embedded within LBN 552. The LDN 1228 area also contains the Herbig–Haro objects HH 199 and HH 200, associated with very young stars still surrounded by the clouds from which they formed.

Cepheus remains one of my favourite regions of the sky and, whenever I have the opportunity to work beneath a truly dark sky, I am always more than happy to return and collect photons among its dust clouds.

Clear skies!

Simone

“Centaurus A - Echoes of a Galactic Collision”

NGC 5128, better known as Centaurus A, is one of the most remarkable galaxies visible from the Southern Hemisphere.

Located approximately 12 million light-years away, it is believed to have formed through the collision of a giant elliptical galaxy with a smaller spiral galaxy. The most obvious evidence of this violent past is the enormous band of dust cutting across its bright core, filled with regions of active star formation.

At the centre of the galaxy lies a supermassive black hole around 55 million times the mass of our Sun. It powers immense jets that extend far beyond the galaxy, making Centaurus A one of the strongest radio sources in the sky.

This wide field view also reveals the galaxy’s extended halo, numerous globular clusters and countless distant galaxies scattered throughout the background.

MW9 - Galactic Cirrus in Apus

A faint river of Milky Way dust drifting through the far southern constellation of Apus.

Mandel Wilson 9, also known as MW9 & nicknamed “The South Celestial Serpent”, is a beautiful example of galactic cirrus / integrated flux nebula. Unlike the brighter nebulae many of us are used to imaging, this dust is not illuminated by a single nearby star. Instead, it reflects the combined light of the stars of our own galaxy, making it extremely faint and subtle.

What I love about this field is the sense of depth. In front, we have delicate clouds of dust belonging to the Milky Way. Behind them, small distant galaxies can be seen shining through the haze, including IC 4633 and IC 4635.
