25 years ago today, my hometown of Ridgewood, NJ lost 12 people in the attacks of September 11th. My next door neighbor GINA SZTEJNBERG was one of them. She worked on the 96th floor of the North Tower. Gina and her husband Mike immigrated from the same village in Poland, had two daughters, Laurie and Julie, and lived the American dream. They were our very first friends when we moved to New Jersey. Laurie and I took piano lessons together in the Sztejnberg’s living room. Mike and Gina commuted into Manhattan together early each morning, including on September 11th, 2001.

JON VANDEVANDER, a family friend, died on the 92nd floor of the North Tower. His wife Annie was a teacher and swim coach of mine in 2nd Grade. I thought she was the coolest. Jon and Annie spoke several times after the plane hit that morning. His final messages were of love, for his wonderful wife and their three beautiful children Jonny, Janey, and Molly, who were young kids when their father was taken from them and have grown up to be adults that would make their dad proud.

Thinking today of all the families like the Sztejnbergs and the Vandevanders who have been missing someone terribly for these last 25 years. 🙏 by @williegeist
