The Babi Yar Massacre, which took place on September 29-30 1941 near Kyiv, stands as one of the largest single massacres of the Holocaust. In a ravine called Babi Yar, Nazi Einsatzgruppen executed over 33,000 Jewish men, women, and children in just two days. Victims were forced to undress and were shot at the edge of the ravine, their bodies falling into mass graves below.

Unlike the extermination camps, Babi Yar involved no gas chambers or formal facilities—only efficient systematic murder. This massacre revealed the horrifying speed and brutality with which the Nazis could carry out mass killings even outside the camps. Families were annihilated together, and entire communities were erased almost instantaneously, leaving behind only silence and grief.

Babi Yar symbolizes both the vulnerability of Jewish communities in Nazi-occupied territories. It underscores that the Nazi genocide was not only industrialized in camps but also carried out with terrifying immediacy and precision in occupied cities and towns. The ravine remains a solemn reminder of lives lost and the scale of human suffering inflicted by the Nazi regime.

HERE’S WHAT DIDN’T HAPPEN ON YOM KIPPUR

There was no massacre of Jews in the northern England, because police captured two would-be terrorists just before they implemented their plan to target the Manchester Jewish community.

A massacre was narrowly averted in Belleville, Canada, when a former Canadian soldier opened fire on a synagogue. No worshippers were hit; one police officer was seriously wounded. Former military colleagues said the attacker was known for blaming Jews for the Covid-19 pandemic.

There was no Jewish massacre near Pittsburgh on the Jewish holy day, because the FBI arrested an ISIS-inspired terrorist as he was preparing an attack. A rifle, 200 rounds of ammunition, and several dozen knives were found in his hotel room.

There was no mass burning of Jews at a synagogue in the German city of Wuppertal, because an alert congregant managed to quickly extinguish the fire caused when an Afghan national hurled three firebombs at the building.

Any one of these planned attacks could have been tragic. Antisemites are turning to violence. by @williehandler
