Murphy came into my life in February 2009. We brought him home on St Patrick’s Day. Soon after I became his “hooman”. He protected me and I did the same. On Wednesday Sept 24, 2025 he will get his wings at the great age of 17. Over the last few weeks and months he has had fewer goods days than bad - it’s his time. But the time he gave me and my family was always borrowed - dogs are like that - they come in sometimes like Murphy did as a wild and crazy child, and find their groove making a huge impact - filling a hole. He joined Kirby and then lil’Max joined the pack. Murphy is the last of the 3 - last but not least. He was always the jester of his own court - playing and finding joy in everything. There was nothing more fun to him than a ride in the car - he was our co-pilot, the best to run to the store with or for a long weekend trip.

To be honest, I grew to believe that Murphy’s soul was that of my paternal grandfather - sent back to me when I needed him the most. He even had a heart shaped pattern in the marking on his side. Murphy always showed the love that my Papa showed me - who knows but I guess anything is possible. Dogs are like that - they find you more than you finding them. They adopt you because they will move on in the end - their life is short but a dogs love… a dogs love is truly forever.

Fuck. This is so hard. He’s laying here next to me as I write his obituary without any clue that we will take away his pain tomorrow so he can join Kirby, Max, and my dad. I just hope that Murphy will be there wherever “there” is waiting to lick my face and play with his “flat bird” toy with me.

I will miss you buddy. You are my heart. You are why I got up every morning. You were my protector - you gave me more than I ever gave you. Thank you for giving me my best 17 years of my life. I love you buddy and I will miss you so much.
