Memories for a forgetful mind.

Letting go. Supporting local.

Cooked. Hungry for more. Fading.

My favorite shorts, given to my favorite place, to my favorite artist Oscar, who handcrafted this box from the spirit of an incredible left-hander — best viewed with a telescope 👀 — hence the name.

Side note: there are still plenty of secret spots, and plenty of boats that somehow all migrate to the same break, as if called to a meeting by a superior.

The secrets shall remain in the box.

Memories.

I will keep my favorite memories in the box.

However awake and altered, while humble.. man in the box meaning and message beyond the self aggrandizement: media censorship and the manipulation of public perception by government and media. So bad its good, full Edsel, never go full Edsel. Too Late, Too Deep, Too Fatigued. Infiltrated, Irritated, Audience watching the show sold to the largest bidder, we ask who and what comes next. Kapu
Traditional clothing of the Mentawai Tribe. This is how kapu, barkcloth, is made. This method predates woven fabric. Thank you for the new clothes; I am still learning how to wear them appropriately. Kapu is produced by stripping the inner bark from trees, then soaking and pounding it into soft, wearable sheets.

However vain this attempt may be to preserve the art, this post still attempts.

The trail that once led to this village was plowed with a bulldozer, sections paved, and electric power now finds its way into nearly every home. Stores now carry plastic-wrapped products, and the natural ways of millennia now fade into records such as this.

One day we may be forced to return to the natural path. Alas, we may never hold this experience for long, nor take any of it with us upon departure. by @willoakwild

Cultural resistance. Despite government reform efforts, and the crushing population density pressing into every corner of Earth, dissolving what once was into the pedestrian amalgamation of consumerism, here remains something precious and rare: a life still in tune with the environment. Not easy. Not to be romanticized. Not something to be copied or reproduced. Simple and profound.

Sago palm roasted in a bamboo tube. 10/10. Soft like mochi. Sustaining the beautiful, deeply endearing Mentawai people of Siberut since the beginning.

Precariously just beyond the rushing masses, may you stay hidden, revealed only briefly to the curious who wander. by @willoakwild

We surrendered everything we truly needed
the medicine in the backyard,
the old knowledge,
the means to live—
for comfort, convenience, and the illusion of progress,
only to become enslaved by achievement.

Drinking from medicine from a leaf:
at the beginning, and at the end.

Vague and ambiguous musings
from the edge of the pre- and post-apocalypse,
from a sovereign land among the last peoples
still holding intact their original ways,
beyond the reach of the consuming hordes.

How do we protect this precious paradise
from the masses drawing near?
Is it safe to invite commerce?
How do we meet material need
without inviting cultural dilution?

All of this will be lost in time by @willoakwild

Memory is what you think it is.

Each ball here represents a memory. We are swimming in a pool of them. When you see a series of one color of ball you will see it everywhere.

The “blue dot theory” could suggest that humans are hard-wired to be pessimists, after psychologists discovered that once our brains are primed to see something (such as a blue dot), we see it everywhere, even when it’s not really there.

So do you see the memory, coded in a blue ball, this represents something particular. Now will you see it everywhere?

Change the meaning of the blue ball and you can alter your reality. Remember You will see repetition everywhere.

As I do not know, I also know.
