a love letter for my dearest friend since they haven’t been earthside for 365 days now: there aren’t a lot of words for the last year but i will do my best. it feels like a flash grenade went off in my head on february 1st and only now is the ringing in my ears beginning to dissipate. I would give everything up to be brought back to booth 203 in bp in 2016, just to have these last 10 years again with you. it has been one of my life’s greatest privileges to witness Anika and all of their magic, splendour and radiance - it was damn near impossible to be around Anika for more than a few seconds without a huge smile spreading across your face. I have never known someone who could light up a room like that. Anika has always been, and will always be, more stardust than human in the most awe-inducing ways. the depth of the ocean has nothing on Anika’s eyes. full of constellations and galaxies, and capable of making you feel lighter than air, infinite and blissfully enchanted. Anika was always able to create soft universes between dreams and intuit their way into tender spaces. their beauty was painted and sculpted by cotton candy clouds, constantly absorbing the brightest and most beautiful fractals and shining a light in the places where people needed it the most. what an honour it has been to have my heart absolutely shattered by Anika. after the initial shock and tidal waves, grief really is just about learning how to lose someone in a million different ways each and every day. Anika will never be farther than a thought, feeling or memory away but god damn do i wish i could hold them one more time and hear that laugh again. now i know i will never be alone down by the water. until next time, (this is a promise). Brittany’s funeral will be held tomorrow in ‘prince george, bc.’ there will be a lunch afterwards at the aboriginal housing society of pg. it would have been Brittany’s 29th birthday last friday - her champagne birthday. it took me a long time to find the words for you, my girl. i am relieved that we know where you are now. my heart hurts but you remind me that it used to smile too. we will forever sleep under the same big sky. you are so much more than a statistic. you are not just another native girl taken away from us along the highway of tears. people searched for you everyday. our community will grieve you for the rest of our lives. your tomorrow is now etched into all of our eternities. those 89 days were absolutely hollowing. i am devastated by the conditions that made this a reality. i am furious that native women are still going missing on their own lands. i am not shocked but enraged that the rcmp found ‘no criminality.’ what is not criminal about a native woman going missing on her own lands? i am dreaming of a day when I am not utterly exhausted from this continual colonial exchange with all my native friends, ‘i am so sorry for your loss.’ Brittany’s family has known so much hurt. yesterday, over 1000 people on Lekwungen Lands stood in solidarity against the genocide happening in Gaza. today, the relentless bombing and killing of Palestinian children continues. tomorrow, I pray for a near future in which the People of Palestine are free. free from the illegal occupation of their lands. free from american imperialism. free from zionism and apartheid. free from skies that have only seen 'israeli' bombings and bombardments while Palestinian blood and bereavement fill the air. free from the people who sit by idly and watch as an entire population gets wiped off the face of the earth. from Turtle Island to Palestine, may all Indigenous People return safely to their lands in song, prayer and dance. our liberation is bound together.
