Thank you to everyone who signed up for a class at Willow Fest Northwest 2026! Classes filled very quickly! But you can still put your name on a wait list, you never know what might open up. Wait lists are open for most classes (all except Weaving Fundamentals with Mo Hohman, that wait list has been closed due to the number of people already on it).

To put your name on a wait list, go to https://www.basketryguild.org/calendar (link in bio) and scroll down to the wait list item in July. The last image in this post is what you are looking for.
When using the wait list, please be sure to continue thru all the steps, it will look like you are making a purchase (but you will not be asked for your payment info). When complete, you will get an email confirmation. If you don’t see an email from Columbia Basin Basketry Guild/squarespace we have not gotten your request!

If you did sign up but want to ask about any possible changes to your housing choice, or even class choice, you can use the wait list to get us that information as well.

Willow Fest Northwest 2026 registration opens April 19 at noon Pacific Time!
Willow Fest will be held July 23, 2026 - July 26, 2026 at
Reed College in Portland, OR.
Five workshops will be offered this year. One workshop will be posted here each week until registration opens.

When you register you will select your workshop based on your skill level, experience, and the projects offered.
Workshops are limited to 9 participants.

Willow Immersion with Katherine Lewis @willowbasketmaker
In this four-day workshop, you’ll create two baskets appropriate for intermediate to advanced weavers.
Understanding of pairing, waling, French randing, and willow borders is necessary. Hand strength is necessary
for these projects and comfort using a knife is important for cutting scalloms.

Rope Coil Weave Basket
In this workshop you will make a bowl-shaped
basket. To create the coil weave, we start with slender weavers of graduated
lengths. The willows are sorted precisely, and the weave creates a coil that
gives this basket its distinctive look.

Fitched Willow Shopping Basket ~
Working with bark-on willows, students will weave an oval
shopping basket with a cross handle using scallomed-on stakes and fitched
sides.
The focus will be on fitching, shaping, and how to create a strong, functional basket.

 Class fee: $685 including materials

More details about the event, our instructors, the venue and all the classes is at https://www.basketryguild.org/what-we-do#/willow-fest-northwest or link in bio.

Textures and Waves with Margaret Mathewson (bio link on the Willow Fest webpage)
In this workshop, you’ll create two projects appropriate for
advanced beginner through intermediate weavers. Basic twining (pairing) knowledge
required (but may be with other material such as reed). Beginner with willow OK but MUST know twining,
waling, and basic joining. The Textural Techniques project is especially good for people who love willow, but
whose hands may not be up to the larger withies.
.
———
Wavy Willow Shopper
Create a unique patterned handbasket or mini-backpack using
tapestry weave and small colorful willows and other withies such as cherry,
dogwood, and cedar. Learn an oval base in pairing and randing, invisible joins
in a few variations, and rod or corded border.

Textural Techniques - an Exploration in Small Willows ~
Create a basket with multiple smaller willows in a fusion of techniques. This
project is focused on hand holding for a tight weave. We will practice S and Z
twining, randing variations, 3 strand variations including braids, and adding
bark strips- all in small colorful willows. Practice controlling a shape and
creating textures. Learn a few ways to add and subtract warps and splice wefts
with no cut ends. Finish the border in a few different ways, from very basic to
braids.

Class fee $680 including materials

Weaving Fundamentals with Mo Hohmann @woventhresholds
In this four-day workshop, you’ll make two sturdy willow baskets.

Skill level: Beginner and beyond. These are great baskets for a beginner, or an intermediate who is
looking to repeat techniques to grow their skills as a basket maker.
———
Round Willow Harvest Basket with Bow Handle is a stake and strand willow basket beginning with a round
base and pairing technique. We will focus on choosing and preparing our
materials in a way to create intentionality and consistency in the texture and
form of our baskets. We will work with a 3-rod wale for the upset of our basket,
and chase weaving, French randing, a 5 by 2-rod border. We will finish with a
wrapped bow handle.

Curvy Round Willow Harvest/Storage Basket with Inset Handles ~
This stake and strand willow basket begins with a round base using pairing. We
will expand our skills from a straight-walled basket towards shaping with a bit
more of a curve, working with willow’s innate form as it grows. We will weave
a ‘false foot’, work with a 3-rod wale for the upset of our basket, and chase
weaving with a 4-rod wale, double French randing, packing to build up parts of
the basket to create a beautiful swooping inset handle. We will finish with a 5
by 2-rod border.

Class fee: $710 including materials

Square Work with Maria Bullock @swamp.sticks

These projects are appropriate for intermediate and advanced weavers.

We will start with a trug, making a base in a screw block, scalloming the
uprights, adding the corner posts, and then finishing with a 5-rod
border and sharp square corners.
We will follow with another square base made in a screw block,
explore a different method of adding corners and uprights, learn
how to control your square sides while building up, and finish with
a 5-rod border and a blunt corner. We will complete the basket by adding a
handle through the center or roped handles on the sides.

The Art of the Curve with Carol Horvath @chorvath8
In this workshop, you will create two projects appropriate for
advanced beginners and beyond.
You should have some experience with French randing, waling, and some borders
in order to complete these baskets successfully.

Round Bottomed Sculptural Basket
You’ll begin with a Catalan or regular slath base and then
secure the stakes with 4-rod waling. You’ll learn to shape the sides to
encourage and control the rounded shape. The body of the basket will
be woven with single or double French randing, zigzag, or Irish weaves.
The rod border can be either level or sloped.

Round Bottomed Asymmetric Basket with Rod Border
You’ll begin by making a round Catalan or slath base and
secure it with 4-rod waling. You’ll shape the rounded bottom with
French randing then utilize a variety of techniques (zig zag, Irish
weave, or more randing) as you progress upward in an asymmetric
sloped border fashion. Then you’ll create a 4-5 rod sloped border on
two sides and finish with a driftwood or other wood handle. Bring
your own special handle piece or use one of Carol’s.

Day two: Everyone was rapt during the willow steaming demonstration. Teachers discussed various techniques, and we even learned about how to steam willow off the grid. The steamed willow smells sweet. We inhaled that unique and beautiful scent. The 3 groups then focused on the next steps of their own baskets. So intense and so much fun! by @willowfestnorthwest
