My journey with this business has at times been incredibly tough, but also incredibly exciting!

Today I get amazing joy from every email or review, and know that despite the hard work it’s everything I ever wanted in a job. And I don’t think I’m ever going to be able to give it up!

You know the one.

The beautiful candle you were given for Christmas. The one that smells too nice to burn. The one you keep looking at and thinking, “I’ll save that.”

Save it for what? 😂

Light it on a completely ordinary Wednesday.

Light it while you’re making dinner.
While you’re answering emails.
While you’re sitting on the sofa with a cup of tea and absolutely nothing exciting happening.

I think we’ve become very good at saving lovely things for special occasions.

But maybe the lovely things are what make an ordinary day feel a little bit special.

Burn the candle. Use the good glasses. Wear the nice perfume.

And if you have one of our bauble candles from last Christmas, we now do Melt and Pour refill bags so you can remake it!

I’m not convinced most people actually care whether their candle is made from natural wax.

There. I said it.

Candle brands (including us!) spend a LOT of time talking about wax.

Soy wax. Coconut wax. Rapeseed wax. Natural wax. Wax blends…

But when you’re standing there choosing a candle, is that really what makes you buy it?

Or are you thinking:

Does it smell incredible?
Will it make my home feel lovely?
Does it look beautiful?
Will it burn well?
Is it worth the money?

Obviously what goes into a candle matters, hugely, and I’ll always care about the ingredients we use.

But I’m curious whether you care about the wax anywhere near as much as candle makers think you do.

So be brutally honest….

Have you ever put a candle back because it wasn’t made from natural wax?

After several years making candles for us and other brands, this one question is the one I get asked the most. Just loading up with more scent isn’t always the answer.

Every fragrance behaves differently in wax. Some naturally have incredible room presence, while others are softer and more subtle even at the same fragrance percentage.

Then there’s the wax, wick, vessel size and burn temperature to consider. They all work together to determine how effectively that fragrance is released when the candle is burning.

In fact, adding more fragrance can sometimes have the opposite effect, affecting the burn rather than improving the scent throw.

This is why testing is such an important part of our development process.

We look at the candle as a whole - fragrance, wax, wick and vessel and work to find the combination that gives the best possible performance.

It needs to perform beautifully when it’s lit, too.

So don’t always increase the scent load to get a better throw. It isn’t always the answer.
