It was brought to my attention for Hispanic heritage month that 28 years ago today (1992) I became the 1st Male Puerto Rican to be featured in a Major clothing companies National Ad Campaign. Very fitting as #fashionweeknyc2022 comes to an end. I will never forget when my partner Eddie Picket and I were approached to participate in this campaign. We were a Hip Hop group called The Zooty Zoo at the time and we would frequently perform in NYC nightclubs. After a show one night a gentleman approached us saying he was starting an urban street campaign for BOSS.We were both skeptical at the time because the dude seemed a bit strange and we were Rappers we didn’t want to be models!But he offered 2 broke dudes from Brooklyn $650 each to star in the campaign (That was a lot of sneaker and Weed money back then)Eddie was Panamanian and I Puerto Rican.Next thing you know it as I am walking down the block EVERY bus has my picture on the side of it, every magazine full page ads….Then I get off the train one day at time Square and look up and there is a massive Billboard with my photo on it! Ground breaking moment for Street Wear in America! When we started combing the worlds of Wine & Hip Hop people thought Sadat X and I were crazy!They said: I don’t believe this, Sadat X is reviewing Wine…..But we knew we were on to something!!Sadat and I kept creating hysterical episodes and we kept gaining more and more fans and momentum for the show….eventually we got a call from @lettie.teague from the Wall Street Journal who said she would like to do a piece about The True Wine Connoisseurs.We will always have so much love for Lettie Teague and all that she does for the Wine Community….Thank you for being so supportive my friend! For those unaware I was part of the original art team run by Dave Skilken at JIVE Records that created the first A Tribe Called Quest album cover for “People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm.”Today I received an original sealed copy of the album so I can frame it!! Soooo stoked about having this keep sake for my contribution to this project. by @willtellevision
