BYOB + ❤️

Will Varley: When the late, great Phil May of The Pretty Things (cited as a major influence by both David Bowie and Jimmy Hendrix) began curating songs for what would become the band’s final studio album, amongst covers of songs by Muddy Waters, Sheryl Crow and Robert Johnson, May included a song by British singer-songwriter Will Varley. In becoming an avid fan of the troubadour from Kent he joined an army of followers that has been growing steadily across the globe for last ten years and includes the likes of Billy Bragg, Skin from Skunk Anansie and Adam Duritz from Counting Crows, all of whom consider Will to be one of the best songwriters of his generation.
In recent years Will has become a regular collaborator in the writing rooms of Nashville and Los Angeles, co-writing songs with Grammy award winning and CMA winning artists from the heart of the country music world. But over the last few months he has been holed up in his ramshackle studio, deep in the Kentish wilderness, working away on his latest offering – a new album now firmly on the horizon.

Sam Tabor: Louisville, Kentucky songwriter and creator Sam Tabor connects with millions through his videos and music. As an artist, he brings that connection into a more personal space, blending indie rock and folk influences with honest songwriting about relationships, change, and everyday life. taken in The Monarch by @willvarleymusic

I’m 3000 miles and 3 shows in, driving solo across the great American west. Tacos, dive bars and cheap motels that smell of cigarettes and hairspray and have done since the seventies. Where you can’t sleep for the dulcet tones of the drunken couple arguing in the parking lot till 3am and the red neon sign buzzing outside the window.

Twice already I have driven over fourteen hours between shows. And I’m only just getting started. Such a great surprise when my old friend @frankturner turned up to the Austin show.

We have some great local supports filling in for the unfortunately absent (due to visa issues) @beans.on.toast. I also have @mikefrazierva jumping on the bill tonight and tomorrow, and the one and only @billtomlarry of @felicebrothers joining me from Boston onwards.

It’s great to be back again America. Keep spreading the word, get your tickets and I’ll see you all on the road very soon!

What songs do you wanna hear?

Will Varley is crossing the Atlantic from England for a run of U.S. shows this fall, including a Saturday night at Live From The Divide in Livingston. That’s roughly 4,568 miles from London to Livingston as the crow flies.

The English songwriter has spent years touring internationally, from South London open mics to the Royal Albert Hall, Glastonbury and headline shows across Europe and the U.S. Along the way, he’s earned the support of artists including Billy Bragg and Frank Turner and built an audience of more than 50 million streams.

On Oct. 10, we get him in our listening room.

When I was about seven or eight (the same age my eldest is now) I saw @john.otway play a set at the Green Fair in Kingston and it blew my mind. I thought… maybe I could do that!

Well, turns out I can’t. No one can. No one does it like John. No one could ever come close. Watching him play live is like being in the room when a star explodes. Like a tin can in a microwave. War and peace. The hardest you ever laughed, and the hardest you ever cried, all wrapped up in the thrash of an electric guitar and that wild smile.

John was my gateway drug into Billy Bragg and Dylan and everyone else. I chased him around a bit over the years. I used to stand at the back whenever he played The Grey Horse or The Ram Jam. Me and my Dad saw him at a little boozer in Ashford a couple of times. A few years ago I caught him after a gig at The Astor Theatre and told him he was the reason I played music… “I’m ruining people’s lives now!” He said excitedly to his tour manager.

Was a great to catch him again tonight at @thelighthouse50. As electric and insane as ever.

If you’ve never heard his songs, go listen to the Premature Adulation record immediately, and go see him if he’s playing anywhere near you.

My US tour kicks off in five days.

Cor baby, that’s really free!!

I might be a little bit biased, but @smugglersfestival is the best one. Nothing else comes close.

We grew up in these fields. Fell in love with the people we’d spend our lives with. Weathered the rain and made hay when the sun shine came.

I remember visiting the site with Will @blind_yeo_band that first summer. Sticking a hammer in the ground where we thought the main stage should go. Will driving his mad old post office van that he’d converted to run on chip oil instead of petrol…

I watched my kids run around the field this year. So many old friends. And a few I looked for but couldn’t find. Hope your dreams are coming true wherever you are. Be careful of time. It seems to be insatiable.

Massive love to everyone who’s involved in putting this thing together. It’s the greatest show on earth. But don’t tell anyone about it. Shhhhh
