It’s January and thus begins my annual attempt to do #52in52! Starting off with #MargaretAtwood’s #TheYearoftheFlood (while listening to #JoniMitchell, so enjoying everything good that comes from Canada)...read and loved #OryxandCrake, the preceding book in this trilogy, and as a longtime lover of Atwood, I figured it’s a good place to start. “But compassion takes work, and we were young.” by @willwhatareyoudoing

Tonight’s #masteringtheartoffrenchcooking - pan fried chicken cutlets with asparagus and mushroom caps baked in lemon juice, garlic, and Swiss cheese, all served in a Sauce Aurore (béchamel and homemade tomato paste). Aside from the minor injury my thumb I sustained, a complete success! The sauce was the exact shade of pink I wanted, unlike the last time I made it, and had a little extra flavor - a little tarragon in the tomato paste goes a long way. #juliachild taken in Washington Heights by @willwhatareyoudoing

This week commenced my return to cooking, starting with an old favorite, onion soup! I don’t know how I did it, but this was the best I’ve ever made it. Even though the onions were a little overly browned, the broth was flavored perfectly (extra shot of cognac) and the crudités were crispy to perfection. And don’t even get me started on the cheese! It even held up on a reheat for lunch the next day! Only thing I did wrong was start cooking at 9:30...didn’t get to eat till after midnight! #masteringtheartoffrenchcooking #juliachild taken in Washington Heights by @willwhatareyoudoing
