Avec All Around, la chorégraphe Mette Ingvartsen met en scène sa rencontre artistique avec un batteur australien inclassable: Will Guthrie.
Au centre d’un espace encerclé par le public, où la lumière se trouve constamment en mouvement, Mette Ingvartsen déploie pour l’occasion un vocabulaire minimaliste, qui fait la part belle à la répétition et à la vitesse. Rotations et girations entretiennent le dialogue avec la musique audacieuse de Will Guthrie, adepte de l’improvisation. Un concert dansé qui convoque la transe, pour mieux confronter deux corps et deux imaginaires.

Join renowned Australian drummer and percussionist Will Guthrie for an intensive four-hour workshop exploring polyrhythmic and polymetric approaches to contemporary percussion, with a particular focus on texture, timbre, resonance and collective listening.

Drawing on decades of experience across experimental music, free improvisation and percussion, Guthrie will introduce participants to rhythmic concepts that challenge conventional ideas of pulse, meter and musical time. His practice has been shaped by collaborations with artists including Mark Simmonds and Mark Fell, as well as by his deep engagement with Javanese Gamelan and Carnatic rhythmic systems.

The workshop approaches rhythm not only as a system of beats and subdivisions, but as something that can emerge from texture, density, repetition, resonance and physical gesture. Participants will explore how a rhythmic structure can be created without relying on a conventional pulse, and how seemingly abstract or fragmented sounds can develop into complex rhythmic relationships.

Through a combination of practical exercises, listening, discussion and collective playing, participants will investigate how different rhythmic cycles, sounds and textures can coexist, overlap and interact.

Liquid Architecture is ecstatic to present Will Guthrie & James Rushford in duo, with a solo performance from Delphine Dora at the Carlton Church of All Nations. The program traverses experimentalism with a vastness of roots; free jazz, musique concrète, medieval instrumentation, organ music, and cracked electronics to name the immediate.

Delphine Dora is a French pianist, organist, vocalist, improviser, and composer, born in Paris in 1980. For nearly two decades, she has cultivated a distinctive and intuitive musical language that bridges improvisation, folk, contemporary classical, experimental and electroacoustic music, as well as poetic expression. Situated at the confluence of composition and improvisation, her work unfolds through a singular and highly accomplished practice of instant composition, where form emerges in the immediacy of performance. Deeply anchored in the present moment, it explores altered temporalities and sensitive geographies, weaving resonant connections between the contemporary and the archaic, the poetic and the ineffable, the physicality of sound and the ethereal, the outer world and inner life.

Will Guthrie is an Australian drummer / percussionist living in France. He plays solo using different combinations of drums, percussion, amplification and electronics, and leads the contemporary hybrid percussion / gamelan group ENSEMBLE NIST-NAH. His music has been released on labels such as Black Truffle, Editions Mego, Erstwhile, Clean Feed, Gaffer Records, Hasana Editions, 23five, iDEAL and his own label Antboy Music.

James Rushford is an Australian composer-performer, whose work draws from concrète, improvised, avant-garde and collagist musical languages, staking out an idiosyncratic stylistic space that has been described as ‘electro-acoustic experimentation with a beating heart’ (Boomkat) and ‘haunted Jacobean ASMR’ (The Wire).

Two singular forces in contemporary experimental music collide in the rhythmically unhinged pairing of Container and Will Guthrie.

Container, the long-running electronic project of Ren Schofield, brings raw, angular electronics and stripped-back rhythmic pressure into contact with the propulsive percussion of Australian drummer Will Guthrie. Together, the pair collide and mutate each other’s distinct musical processes, pushing electronics and percussion into volatile new territory.

We are continuing our series of curated fundraisers with Richard Dawson putting together this amazing line up! These fundraisers are incredibly important to our survival as a venue, for every packed out gig that we host we have many fantastic, but sparsely attended ones, often for emerging or experimental/boundary pushing artists. This is an issue that many grassroots venues face, whilst there are positive signs on the horizon and we continue working to make the venue sustainable for the long term, in the interim we need your help! In the past the funds from these events have literally kept us open, thanks to the generosity of the audiences and artists involved. Anyway thats enough about how important they are, its also just a great night and this edition has a blinder of a line up!

Richard Dawson is of course a local legend and he has hand picked an amazing line up including Australian drum maestro Will Guthrie, Yorkshires premier psychedelic one man unit in Astral Social and Stockport based accordionist and folk musician Heather Ferrier! The actual set times will be revealed much closer to the gig, and the order might not be what you expect!

Sonics is super excited to host its first live show in ace record store Tough Love St Leonards with a rare duo performance from two highly regarded artists.

Back once again, and this time as one half of a rhythmically explosive duo, Container, the St Leonards on Sea based electronic project of Ren Schofield, is joined by Australian percussionist, Will Guthrie.

Will Guthrie uses various combinations of drums, percussion, amplification and electronics within his deep explorations of the world of rhythm. His live and recorded output spans solo work, improvised music, multiple collaborations (with Mark Fell, Oren Ambarchi to name a few) and his work with contemporary hybrid percussion/gamelan group Ensemble Nist-Nah. @willwillguthrie

Schofield’s work stretches into the wildest corners of noise-rock, tape music, techno and high tempo distorted electronics and has taken his live show all over world this year with shows in the US and South Korea most recently. His recent solo set for Sonics in Hastings down in the Brewing Brothers Courtyard basement in June was a crushing, mind melter.

Support comes from Bexhill on Sea’s greatest living musicians, The Brothers Bula, internationally renowned for their multi-faceted musical style and avant-garde anti-aesthetic. They can be found performing in various locations all over the UK, either in duo form or in various collaborations (Sexton Ming, Jason Williams, The Defamation Project) and are also members of all-star avant-garde big band Statue of Liberty Big Band.
