Wilson Tanner (@wilsontanner69)—the project of Andrew Wilson and John Tanner, have long created music shaped by the environments in which it is recorded. Their albums are not just collections of compositions but documents of place, woven with the textures of the natural and domestic worlds around them.

Their debut 69 (2016) emerged from a backyard in Perth, where synthesisers and clarinet sat alongside pigeons and the incidental sounds of suburban life. With II (2019), the duo relocated to a moored 1950s riverboat on Port Phillip Bay, drawing in birdsong, waves, and the hum of vintage electronics to create drifting, tidal soundscapes.

Their most recent release, Legends (2025), was recorded off-grid among the vines of South Australia’s Manon Farm. The album captures an agricultural rhythm: tractors, ducks, radios, and vineyard ambience sit against improvised electronics and lo-fi textures. It is music porous to its environment—absorbing the seasonal atmosphere and re-emerging as sound.

Presented at the Nest for XVII, Wilson Tanner revealed how music can be cultivated like a harvest: rooted in setting, open to abstraction, and always grounded in a sense of place and process.

Scenes from Wilson Tanner’s Legends launch at Northcote Uniting Church, where the duo erected a cricket-pitch stage complete with stumps + stadium seating. Venerated musicians ‘Evil’ Graham Lee + JP Shilo delivered the night’s most spellbinding turn, opening with a set that folded in a haunting take on The Triffids’ Raining Pleasure.

Profiling sonic investigator @jp_shilo, before he joins ‘Evil’ Graham Lee on stage at the Northcote Uniting Church this Saturday for Wilson Tanner’s Legends launch.

Shilo co-founded shadowy instrumental art-rock outfit Hungry Ghosts, whose magnetic debut album was produced by Rowland S. Howard. Its follow-up, Alone, Alone, + Shilo’s own solo album were both released by ongoing collaborator + Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley. Imprinting bass, violin, + “general strangeness” onto Howard’s cult-enshrined swan song Pop Crimes, he was also a live member of Cut Copy during their In Ghost Colours run + is a longtime Blackeyed Susan.

Stitching together a few highlights from ‘Evil’ Graham Lee’s extensive audio resume ~ a prelude to his upcoming live collaboration with JP Shilo, opening for Wilson Tanner’s Legends launch at Northcote Uniting Church next Saturday.

A pedal steel devotee + pioneer of the instrument in non-country contexts, Lee moved to the UK in the mid-’80s as a member of The Triffids. The band were cast as players on Bill Drummond’s solo album The Man, while Lee’s lap steel famously haunts The KLF’s totemic ambient record Chill Out.

A key contributor to The Blackeyed Susans, current member of Essendon Airport, + former label manager at W.Minc Records ~ this is just a glimpse of his legacy. See you in church!
