Lately I’ve been on a bit of a slim bifold kick, and let’s just say, this one from @nerbhandcrafted has pretty much everything you could want in a little bifold.

It’s made from Horween shell cordovan with natural on the exterior and tumbled reverse marble blue for the pockets. The whole thing is thinly lined with a reverse black and it fits the design perfectly. I love the aesthetics of the whole package with the contrast between the exterior and interior. The stitching is immaculate, as usual for Nara. I tend to set the expectation bar pretty high for her and she never fails to deliver on the craftsmanship.

One detail I really like is the way she intentionally terminates the stitches next to each other at the top corner of the wallet (@leftfootleather does something similar with his card wallets and it doesn’t go unnoticed). Everything feels really well thought out. In my mind, the stitch termination is her makers mark. Maybe I’m just weird about it 😅

The wallets I’ve been collecting lately feel more like art pieces than money holders. Speaking of which, I’m cooking up a rad one that should be ready sometime in 2026.

Can’t wait to throw some patina on this thing.

Alrighty, day one of my little #peakkeys challenge for myself went pretty well. This is gonna be easy (famous last words right?).

The hardest part so far is figuring out where the keys should be when out and about. Loose in pocket? On a suspension clip in pocket? In jacket? Clipped to bag? They’re all decent options, and I think experience with the loadout is going to be the easiest way to determine that.

It’s been a minute since I posted about a new wallet day!

This one is from the venerable @benjaminbott and it’s a doozy. In fact I’m pretty sure Ben and I have been on again off again talking details of a bifold similar to this one for nearly a year. As picky as I am, it took a long time for Ben to gather the perfect materials in his shop to execute the project.

If you’re familiar with with Ben’s products, the pockets in this wallet are basically Waxwing pockets put into a bifold design. I love my waxwing and the pocket geometry is perfectly practical.

Another cool thing about this wallet is that the tannery stamp (on the right side) is a vintage stamp from Horween. Correct me if I’m wrong here, but it’s my understanding that hides with this stamp aren’t handed out to just anyone. It’s a mark of distinction in the craft. And let’s be honest here, Ben nails it basically every time.

Nice work Ben, can’t wait to put a few miles on this 🍻

I try not to get too political on here but ever since all of this trade nonsense with the USA started up, I’ve been making an effort to choose Canadian businesses where possible when shopping for stuff.

In comes Jeff and Megan, the team behind @northbeyond_leathercraft here with the leaf as the makers mark 👀. Not only that but they makes a hand stitched leather cuff that fits a Tim’s coffee cup! Let’s go!! This thing is going right in the cup holder of my car and directly onto the next coffee that comes my way.

On top of it all Jeff makes some pretty sick looking wallets. The one here is his minimal card holder, called the 142, but he’s also got a bifold that’s quilted together creatively with different pieces of leather. Pretty cool if you’re looking to pocket something with a bit more visual sauce.

There’s no cheaping out on the materials here either. I’m pretty sure all the products (cuff included!) are made from Pueblo, some of the highest quality veg tan leather there is from a tannery out of Italy. No nonsensical tariffs jacking up the price here!

The details, they matter! These are words that Matt and Jorge over at @mattrsupplyco eat, sleep, and take morning coffee by.

Ive got a bit of a story about how I picked these wallets up and I’m not sure Matt knows … back at the start of 2024, I was on the hunt to acquire a piece from a shortlist of makers that many would consider grail pieces (no BS @martinsedc will attest). Makers on the list included @benjaminbott @leftfootleather @heightsleathercompany @les_edc @nerbhandcrafted and a few others. All undeniably great makers. The last but not least piece was something from Matt.

The thing about @mattrsupplyco is that they’re kind of known as an Arc wallet factory. Which in this context is absolutely a compliment. The Arc wallet is ubiquitous in the leather crafting scene and is one of the few card carriers that I can identify on sight, regardless of who put it together. If you’re interested, Matt will sell the Arc wallet template so you can make your own (and I’m pretty sure he’s sold a lot of em).

Anyway, a couple months ago Matt was offering up a complimentary slip wallet with the purchase of one of his standard offerings. This little slip wallet is a really cool single pocket card sleeve that is surprisingly practical. In a world filled with three pocket horizontal card holders, the slip really stood out to me.

Since the details matter, a few of the ones that stood out to me include:
- The stitching was done with purpose. I particularly like how the thread was terminated on the side of the wallet that matches in color. Camouflaging the burned end nicely.
- The tannery stamps are specifically positioned on the pockets to fit the piece aesthetically.
- The wallets feel like they went through some iteration to dial the ergos in.
- The edges are aligned perfectly and nicely shiny. But at this level of craftsmanship this is somewhat expected.
- The packaging was on point. Nice box bro.

If you’re looking for a sick wallet for yourself or a friend, definitely check out Matt or one of the other makers mentioned above. All heirloom quality craftsman.

Lord have mercy! Another new wallet day all the way from @leftfootleather in Boston. I don’t think Brad names his wallets, so I would describe this as an asymmetrical card holder with a buttoned cash strap. The only thing I asked for was a slit in the centre pocket, so I can get my bigass fingers in there easier. The rest of this is the brainchild of Brad’s creativity 👌.

I know a lot of people might be hesitant to ask for a maker’s choice wallet. It’s basically a mystery until you open the package right? I can understand the hesitation. What if you don’t like the design choices? On a luxury shell cordovan wallet no less.

If you happen to be someone wrestling with the decision to go with a maker’s choice, let me offer a few tips/insights to both ease your mind and help you get the most out of the experience:

1. Maker’s choice doesn’t have to mean the maker makes ALL the choices. You can point the proverbial ship in the direction you want and let the maker steer it from there.

2. A lot of makers will post photos of their maker’s choice wallets. Try to choose a maker whose aesthetic aligns with your own.

3. A lot of makers are building standard affair wallets all day long and will actually appreciate the opportunity to scratch their creative itch so to speak. This means that there is a reasonable chance that the leather pieces chosen will be a smidge fancier, maybe with a bit more character than the standard offerings.

4. Let’s be real here. The maker knows what works and what doesn’t for their products better than you do. Heed their advice and trust their judgement.

I think hesitation around maker’s choice wallets all boils down to one thing: Trust. It’s hard for some people but once you have it, the sky is the limit.

If you don’t feel like searching for makers, trust me, @leftfootleather is an excellent maker.
