hold up, it’s a terracotta planter 🪴
slow down, what’s the knowledge on that planter?! 📖
(Beyoncé would be impressed that i tried 😂)

so ‘Terracotta’ y’all! these planters are great to have, but how do they work? are they right for your lil’ babes? let’s sip and discover 🍵

the word #terracotta is derived from Italian vocabulary: terra (earth) + cotta (baked) giving us ‘cooked/baked earth’! 🧱 terracotta was chiefly used as ornamental building material and in modeling [clay], and has since evolved to be a key tool in plant success! so, how do we determine if it’s right for your plant?

pictured here is an #alocasia #amazonica which doesn’t* like to be placed in terracotta pottas. that’s okay! she’s thriving with a nursery pot hidden inside. terracotta pottas are designed to wick water away from the soil/substrate, leaving the plant drier than the Sand Dunes of Colorado - parched 🥵. that’s why a tropical plant like this one wouldn’t enjoy being planted directly into the planter. however, i enjoy using a terracotta potta for this plant because i tend to overwater her just a touch. any of the remaining water runs out of the drainage hole, and is absorbed by the planter. this does create a more moist barrier around the nursery pot, ensuring my plant babe that she’s gonna be a-okay! 🧖🏽‍♀️

there are plants that would enjoy these almost crimson-colored crystals, and they are: aloe vera, cacti, hoya plants, or peperomias for example! don’t forget that terracotta pottas can come in a variety of colors, too. if you enjoy the planter but you’re shopping for a tropical plant, simply use a nursery planter as a barrier between the two!

happy #terracottatuesday folx. much love. 😌

Oasis🌱

in my last post, i mentioned that #plantcare can get a little overwhelming. but GURL, do not let it stop you from enjoying the space you create around you!

this was my first apartment in Denver, and within the last week of living in this room, i peaked. 🥲🥴 i’d been experimenting, mixing art and plants together. finding new placements for said plants on my shelves. finding myself in one of my happiest moments. this space truly made me feel like i was ✨oa-SIS✨😂.

be inspired from what’s all around you. if you’re not inspired by it, change it up! in the end, i challenge you to create your own oasis with your plants. (if you’re looking for new ones, some tropical plants i can recommend are: #pothos in any variety, #monsteradeliciosa are key for a tropical oasis vibe, #tradescentia to add to the vine collections, and of course your #fiddleleaffig)

life’s too short, sweetie... just buy the damn plants! 😜

a part of the journey is to express yourself and enjoy your plants! i love having mini-shoots; not just for content but also for fun. sometimes, you get golden plants like this! 😅

don’t forget to let go a little, give in a little, say “yes” a little more, and just be. treat your little shoots like they’re the cover of your favorite magazine! and capture all those pics, no matter what stage you’re in. this crazy, wonderful world is more beautiful because you’re in it, kween! 🥰

happy #saturdaynight y’all, have a great one!

“baby, when i look around my place
lovin’ all the plants taking up space
i’m ecstatic you came home with me tonight
so i can marvel at your neon vines” 🎙💚
(Neon Lights - Demi Lovato)

Neon Pothos (sci classification: epipremnum) are incredibly cute cousins in the pothos family! i was gifted this little nugget last fall by a good friend who couldn’t bring this kiddo on their travels.

their care is quite similar (almost exactly) to a golden pothos. for #plantcare tips on watering, sunlight, and other notable pieces of info, please feel free to check out my older post!

🔍 a #protip i’d like to share from my personal experience is re: watering. most of the time, pothos are really good at communicating about when they need some bubbly. however, i’ve noticed with my neon that there’s a lot less chatter, and a lot more of “figure it out, bud”. which - let’s be real - communication is key in everything, but some investigative work can be respected! if it’s been some time since you’ve shared your water with the plant and* it hasn’t started wilting its leaves, feel them! they are dense when well watered, and flimsy when not. this is a great indication that she is thiiiiiirsty!! (no leaves have been harmed in this experiment!)

happy #thursday to everyone! thanks for bringing the blog to a friend whopping 300+ followers! (and eyebrows by yours truly 😂😜)

oh #pilea
here we go again 🙄
my, my
thought that i just clipped ya’ 🎤

pileaaaaa hunny, what is you doin’!? i swear this plant is on one with how she just feels like producing so many pups (baby pilea) whenever it feels best for her 😂. this cutie is also commonly known as the Chinese Money Tree...or as i’ve recently discovered, the ‘Missionary Plant’. 🙃

Pilea (sci: pilea peperomiodes) are a fun plant to have around, especially with those coin-shaped leaves! this week, i placed her on my new patio so she can capture some afternoon rays with ease, ensuring she’s not leaning to one side or the other. this will ensure her crown never tips, henny! 👸🏽

🚿 watering this kiddo is rather easy! if her leaves are drooping down, it’s not that they’re too heavy, but just that this gurl is thirsty. ensure you give this planty queen a nursery pot in between the planter, allowing for all standing water to run through. water more often if in bright, direct light! 🕵🏽‍♂️

🌤while this cutie has adapted to tolerate medium light, it’s truly best to place her in a bright, indirect location of your home. again, i’ve placed her on my patio as she enjoys lots of bright light, and is doing wonderfully in the direct light as well!

✂️ want more pilea in the house? A-maze! she grows her pups through rhizomes in the soil (and sometimes off her stem) that can be clipped and put right into water for a few weeks. plant once the second round of roots are stable!

happy #friday everyone! #happyplanting

it’s thuuuuuursday gurl and we got the ‘T’ on another #Tradescantia - and we sip! 😜🍵

the beautiful, leggy and long babe you’re gazing at is the ‘tradescantia white velvet’ (sci: tradescantia sillamontana) and he’s a really interesting one to figure out!

i was gifted this lil’ babe approx. two(2) years ago, and since then i STILL haven’t really figured this guy out! he started out a little crusty-dusty and puuuuurple - i quickly (and carefully) cleaned up his face, and watched closely to see if he’d spill on what he likes/dislikes. WELL SHIDDD gurl, he didn’t tell me a single secret! 🤭🤫

🌤 i almost gave up on’em. not knowing which tradescantia he was made things super, super difficult - but i persisted 🙌🏽. for almost two years, i experimented and found that he loves bright, somewhat indirect light. the more light he receives, the “hairier” his leaves stay. quite interestin’ to see it, honestly.

🚿 ‘member how i said i almost gave up on him? well queen, let me tell you when i say i did* not* water* this upside-down plant for THREE MONTHS, i mean it 😬😂. i was like “oh, iight then bye bruv” and let the plant/pot sit on a shelf until later that fall. after i found that 1/2 cup of water every two weeks will do, he started -s p r i n t i n g- to reveal these lovely purple/green leaves and white flowers!

ohkay, so the interesting part: “be like a chameleon” must be this boy’s mantra, because he ✨changes colors✨...😮 that’s right! when he dries out and receives some full sun, he’ll shift his cell energy to a lower color (likely to save energy, tbh) that appears to be a rich purple. but, give the boy some bubbly, and he throws a party and walks his way back to green. peep the second shot to see the under-leaf heading back to purple (it’s been a couple days since watering). if you know why this happens, let a king KNOW, mkay?! mkay.😘 (also no, this is not* a tradescantia pallida, thank youuu.)

happy #thursday to all my kings/queens/kweens in the empire! we hit 250+ followers last night! it’s been SUCH a fun start to the blog 🥲.

perfect in pink 💗

let’s talk about this Tradescantia Nanouk 😍 (swipe right to see her in her full, pink beauty!)

through the web, i was able to purchase this pretty girl last fall. i thought it would be overkill to place her pink leaves (front and back) in a pink pot, but i’m soooo glad i did! here’s how i take care of her:

she likes a lot of bright, indirect light; it’ll make her leaves stack more closely and be more appealing if that’s your vibe! don’t put her in direct sunlight tho. 🙈 she’ll vine and crawl her way toward the light, resulting in bigger leaves and more fun structures (as you can see)!

i water her when i notice the soil is definitely dryyy! because she doesn’t have a drainage hole, i don’t want to overwater as it won’t go anywhere, and likely cause root rot. it’s interesting to have to constantly check in on a plant, but she deserves all the attention. 😂💕 she’s also less sensitive to humid conditions given that she has thiccc leaves. 💁🏽‍♀️

#tradescantia are super easy to propagate as well! ✂️ i believe they have rhizome growth within their stems that allows this process to be straight forward. after cutting her stem below where nodes would grow on a pothos, you can stick the plant directly into soil and it’ll start the growth process! depending on which tradescantia your working with, water propagation may be needed first, but not with Miss #nanouk !

happy #wednesday y’all!

it’s #monsteramonday and ya boy is double-cheeked up and ready to serve some more #monsteradeliciosa knowledge! 🤓🍑

as revealed on friday, edit: i was under the impression that monsteras are a #philodendron. this classification has been updated! - back to it: monsteras are down to clown in bright, indirect lighting. also, she’s one to stay in more humid conditions, and doesn’t love a terra cotta potta! (if you read that as draco malfoy, i understand 😂⚡️)

i personally used to wonder how and why monsteras choose to split their leaves. leaf fenestration (or the act of creating holes/splitting leaves) isn’t unique to just monsteras, but still gives a very unique look nonetheless! 💁🏽‍♀️ the reason they do it is because they want to capture more indirect light, as they’re often found as foliage below tree canopies. fenestration allows the plant to cover more area, with less cell creation, ultimately being more efficient as a plant! 🤓 as recently learned, they also do this to be more stable in windy conditions as well.

i then asked my a friend how she got hers to create leaf fenestrations? she said to give it time, water, and the right sunlight! hers happened to be a few years old, whereas my kiddo was likely prop’d a few weeks before i found her. since then, my plant has given me three “adolescent” split leaves - i’m looking forward to seeing her in 3-5 years! bigger leaves, better fenestration. 🖖

have a solid monday, y’all. and thanks for helping us reach 200+ followers over the weekend!

it’s a cozy #succulentsaturday in Denver, and henny - we’re dressed for the o-cca-sion! this morning, my #snakeplant is poppin’ in and poppin’ OFF! 🥵

this lovely Laurentii (sci: Sansevieria trifasciata) is my high-key e a s i e s t plant to care for because she has the most low-key maintenance, diet, and needs!

now i know in a previous post, i raved about how easily one can care for a #goldenpothos , and i still stand by that sis - don’t you worry 😉. BUT, for those who are looking for a “set it and forget it (kinda)” solution, a snake plant will never do you wrong, fam!

snake plants can thrive in any sort of light - even bright, direct lighting! they do prefer moderate to medium light, but if that just won’t do (lookin’ at you, North-facing Folx) don’t stress the mess. because snake plants like to hold their own, they can withstand incredibly low-lit areas. a word to the wise: just because she can take the shade, doesn’t mean she don’t want the sun, hun! do not** under any circumstances leave any plant of any kind without sun (or light reflection) EVER. plants can’t photosynthesize without those bright beams, and going too long without one can lead to improper growth. ☹️ we aren’t here to stunt potential! that means yes, please go take her out the bathroom if ya gots one in there. 👀👀

water for this lil’ babe is easy, breezy - trust! she really only needs one good gulp every 10-12 days in the growing season. ensure you’re lettin’ that pot get as dry as the Sahara before poppin’ some bubbly on her again 💦.

happy #weekend fam. thanks again to the 100+ followers who joined the empire this week. excited to see how we grow, and i hope you enjoy what i’m servin’ up! 🥰

body, crazy
leaves grow wavy
no midges
great pot taste

y’all, these catchy rewrites can be tricky! let’s get into on this beautiful Thurs. ✨

yesterday, i mentioned that there are other key variables to consider with houseplants. soil moisture was on that ballad. what does soil moisture, and overall soil health, have to do with your plants? i got the tea gurl, so you better sit back and start sippin’! 🍵

soil moisture/health can really speak volumes to your plant’s overall health. we all know that plants need water for photosynthesis, and to move nutrients from the soil into the plant. without water, stunted growth can occur. wait too long to water your plants, and well...they might just be the flower on top of this emoji: ⚰️🥲

how do you ensure your soil is healthy? all over the internet, folx talk about repotting and throwing soil out 🤔 after a plant has lived in it for a few months/years. they’ll say that the nutrients are no longer benefiting the plant. while this might be somewhat true, soil doesn’t just lose its nutrients unless erosion occurs!! it’s important to continue cycling organic matter into (or onto) your soil to help it maintain its own ecosystem and order. what goes on in your soil definitely matters. organic matter that can be composted and cycled into your soil can look like: banana peels, egg shells, or coffee grounds for example. these items are in almost every household!

i’m happy to create another post that speaks to soil moisture and soil health if you’ve found this one helpful. give’em that follow, like, and share to keep the content comin’! 😇😅
