Our shitake logs are in full flush at the moment and we are loving the MAGIC! There is possibly nothing more delicious than a freshly harvested shitake. So soft and delicate yet fleshy and delicious. Our favourite recipe is to slice and marinade them in some sesame oil, a slash of tamari and some of our home ground five spice. Then fry them in sesame oil. Delicious! #shitake #MushroomCultivation #MushroomLogs #fungi #ForestFood by @windfallcommons
It's been a little while between posts due to a full on few months on the farm. Like many folk we have had more rain than we would like. Especially when it started to seep in through the walls of the house! But all this rain has done wonders for the garden and seeing this bumper harvest of raspberries starting to ripen is helping us forget the hard days behind us. #harvest #raspberries #permaculture #WindfallCommons #DjaDjaWurrungCountry #ObtainAYield #GrowYourOwn #gratitude by @windfallcommons
It's taken us a little while to get going but our #ShitakeLogs are fruiting! Mushroom cultivation was one of our lockdown projects and it was fantastic to have the whole family involved in drilling and plugging the logs. Nice to finally show the kids their effort was worth it. Even if they don't like mushrooms 😂 All the more for us! And hopefully soon, enough to share with friends. In the meantime, we're psyched to get more logs going. Locals, let us know if you have any oaks to prune! #mushrooms #MushroomCultivation #shitake #ForestFood #FoodForest #permaculture #mycelium #drummond #DjaDjaWurrungCountry #JaaraCountry #CentralVictoria #WindfallCommons by @windfallcommons
Spotted Hyacinth Orchids are always gorgeous around here. These rare but not shy flowers are not like many of the local orchids, which are tiny and hard to find. The pink splash of the Spotted Hyacinth is very easy to spot on roadsides in the bush. They bring us joy! #DjaDjaWurrungCountry #JaaraCountry #SpottedHyacinthOrchid #wildflowers #WildOrchids #WombatForest #drummond by @windfallcommons
A huge thanks to everyone who came to our biochar burn yesterday. It was SO NICE to have people here again! We had a great burn. Some of our key learnings around wood size and taking the extra time to dry wood really paid off. We were able to complete the burn a lot quicker and start to imagine doubling our production.. Especially great to make some new connections between local people working on good stuff. Nothing like a good hearty fire to stand around while having great chats. Til next year! #biochar #2021burn #WindfallCommons #SoilBuilding #SoilHealth #community by @windfallcommons
It's been a while between drinks (and posts - soz) but we're back with another biochar burn! 3pm til late. BYO plate and cutlery if you're here for dinner. We'll be making our char ancient style with a good old fashioned pit, and a lot of standing around leaning on a rake. Check our Facebook event for details or PM. We'll be burning from 3pm for approximately 12 hours. Sunday is the fun day when we get on boots on smooth reggae tunes and stomp the char down fine. Then we build a stinky manky inoculation bath! Anytime from 10am Sunday visitors welcome. Brought to you by Windfall Commons and Sustainable Malmsbury. #biochar #CarbonFarming #soil #SoilBuilding by @windfallcommons
Goat's gonna goat. These two are very helpful. When they want to be. Which isn't often... But they do strike a good pose! #goats #GoatsOfInstagram #WeedEaters by @windfallcommons
It's taken us a couple of years of learning thanks to deep wisdom from @growgreatfruit and hands on learning with @tellurian_fruit and we finally have an apple crop! We inherited a neglected orchard that was much loved by local possums and parrots. Three years of selective pruning to get these trees down to netable height and we have the sweetest loveliest little pommes! We'll keep working on pruning them down further and giving them lots of yummy nutrient feeds and we should be able to enjoy many more years of fruit from these trees. #ObtainAYield #apples #orchard #FruitTrees #WindfallCommons #permaculture #GrowYourOwn by @windfallcommons
Happiness is jars full of stuff ready to bubble. Thanks @artistasfamily for the relentless inspiration. #fermentation #FermentingFood #fermenting #StickStuffInJars #permaculture #harvest by @windfallcommons
A spectacular afternoon of inspiration with the effervescent Meg from @artistasfamily learning everything we need to know about fermenting. Attending this workshop last year was a game changer for our family and it's so exciting to be back for more. As Meg says "When we eat wild, we invite wildness into our beings." Amen to that! Fermenting is a wonderful way to preserve the harvest, care for our bodies, and make food taste delicious! Thanks Sustainable Malmsbury for organising! #fermentation #fermentingfood #fermenting #pickling #sauerkraut #harvest #malmsbury #SustainableMalmsbury #ArtistAsFamily #permaculture #shareconomy by @windfallcommons
A perfect way to finish a lovely summer day: dinner by the dam followed by a solid blackberry picking session by the creek. With the recent rains the blackberries are going off! Filling containers and stuffing our faces is the most wonderful feeling in the world. Plenty left for wildlife and friends so everyone gets their share. Locals who want in, hit us up! Now for jams, cordials, ferments, fruit leathers and more! #foraging #blackberries #delicious #dessert #SummerFruit #walks #WildFood #gratitude #PuddingBagRoad #drummond by @windfallcommons
Love the cheeky acrobatics of a wattle bird! These are one of the more common birds to be found at our place and we love them. Wattle birds are honey eaters and play an important role in a forest ecosystem: pollinating flowers and helping spread seeds. They also delight and entertain us humans. Ensuring you have a diversity of flowering trees in the garden is a great way to welcome them to your garden. #AustralianBirds #WattleBird #HoneyEaters #wildlife #WindfallCommons #DjaDJaWurrungCountry #JaaraCountry #PuddingBagRoad #drummond #permaculture #observation #decolonising #CareForCountry by @windfallcommons
