I have this little sign in my studio, and I hope it inspires you today.

Creativity heals the soul and gives you strength to do hard things. What have you been putting off to try or do later? Today is the day. Go make something. Grow something. Cook something. Write something. Just create!

Market season has begun! Lots of time goes into making the work, prepping for each market, traveling, setting up, time spent the day of, tearing down then making sense of everything once we get home. It’s soo much work but always worth the effort because of the people we meet! Here is one example…We met a couple today that traveled recently to Hungary and we were excited to hear of their experience. Now we are planning our own trip soon🇭🇺 taken in Stratton Mountain, Vermont by @windhamhilldesigns

I always bring a project when I go to work at @arthousevt where I am an artist member. This was today’s project. 🐟Read on if you want to learn a little about it. I love making my own tools, and the process of playing with ideas. A week or so ago I had an idea to carve fish into a leather hard blocks of clay to create stamps. Those stamps went in the kiln to get what is called “Bisque Fired”. This process reduced the moisture in the clay making it less fragile and ready for the next step. In the case of these stamps, I stopped the process here because I planned to use them as tools. You may wonder why the clay turns pink. The clay I am using here is brown stoneware clay, which turns pink in a bisque fire because of the reduction of moisture and other chemical changes that occur when heated to 1950 degrees. If instead of making stamps, I made a bowl, for example, that would be bisque fired as well, followed by application of glaze, then returned to the kiln for a second “Glaze Firing”, which would then turn the clay back to brown. This second kiln firing, to even hotter temperatures, further reducing moisture and virtually eliminates it. Glaze is either brushed, dipped or sprayed on and goes on very chalky, often a totally different color than the end result. This is where the magic happens and you (often) get beautiful results. But it’s really not magic, it’s science. No wonder I love it so much and will always love the process! ❤️ taken in Wilmington, Vermont by @windhamhilldesigns
