Signal to Noise: a column by @windy.500 🔊

“Headless Horseman. First Sun Kil Moon Album. Pumpkin Spice Latte. Fleet Foxes. Gourd in my apartment. Mock neck sweater. Robert Frost. Spiced Ale. Allergy Medication. To the untrained eye, this is a series of unrelated ideas, strange and disconnected. Key actors and nodes in a disparate web, which only after careful examination reveal their true significance to those who are willing to do the work.

To the discerning eye, they are everything. They are critical elements in building a perfect, immaculate New England Fall, to reach that rare state of intoxication known by a chosen few as Fall Vibes. I’ve been consulting the Pinterest Boards, Buzzfeed articles, almanacks, and poets and theorists of autumnal glory. And now my journey begins. My mission for the fall of 2026 is simple: to maximize my autumnal experience and achieve a complete state of Fall Vibes”

Introducing Signal to Noise: a new column by @windy500 🔊

“My birthday was a few weeks ago and I feel normal. On August 6th, I turned 27 years old, which is something to feel pretty normal about. It’s been about half a decade since I lived in New Jersey, and pretty much everything is better. I don’t feel too much stress about becoming an unc or failing to follow my dreams. I have great friends, family, and an interesting job where I basically can afford to live in New York City. I have healthcare, groceries, synthesizers, a small library of strange and wonderful books, studio access, and a laptop with a ton of interesting stuff on it. At least once a week, somebody who I admire or I’ve admired for a long time asks me for a random favor and I’m able to help out 50-70% of the time. I love my neighborhood and I pretty much couldn’t stop running into nice people at the bar if I tried. I guess this is all to say that I don’t think I’ve ever been this happy where I am right now, and for a long time, I wasn’t totally sure if that would ever happen. I’m really grateful for the opportunities I’ve been presented with, the people who have supported me for no reason, and all of the weird twists and turns that’ve led me to this moment. I can’t wait to see what comes next.”

A notion and a concept. A premise and an underlying thought. A nugget, a seedling, an expression of mind at the genesis of an Era. What just was ends there, what is to be begins here, what currently is is kind of just ongoing as we speak. That being this: Total Recall 2's 'Total Recall', premiered by Madjestic Kasual, listened to and viewed by you. It is presently now.

Signal to Noise: a column by @windy.500 🔊

“I tried to go on Nina Protocol to listen to music and you can’t. As of June 21st, the site is no longer browsable. Some of my favorite songs were only on there, but I never bought them, and I’m pretty sure I can’t listen to them again.

If this is somehow how you’re finding out, I regret to inform you that later this summer Nina Protocol is shutting its doors. I just want to lay out my immense appreciation for Nina Protocol and the incredible team there: Mike Pollard, Jack Callahan, Eric Farber, Ian Kim Judd, Cal Hickox, Michael Lorimer, Jon Chiaverina, and a handful of others. They built something earnest. They actually had dreams of a better world and they talked about them in public, which is a difficult thing to do. They built a platform where music was treated with dignity. Nina meant different things to a lot of people: some people thought that they were an Instagram page, some people thought that they threw concerts at their office and sometimes venues, some people thought they were like a platform where you could buy music NFTs. Nina was my favorite place to find new music online.”

KAnneccJioEns #1: Maxwell Ludlow x Sharleen Chidiac

At the beginning of the month, we launched a new seasonal newsletter featuring in depth updates on upcoming programs, KLUB KAJE activities, the ThinkTank Residency, and all other manner of affairs. Each of these newsletters features a conversation between artists engaged in our programs and community, a inside look at the collaborative activities and conversations that take place behind the scenes at KAJE— something we’re calling KAnneccJioEns! The first one is a conversation between Sharleen Chidiac (@sharleenchidiac), director and choreographer of ALL THE RAGE and Max Ludlow(@windy.500), artist and audio engineer.

Among other things, the pair discuss music, performance, and superstition. Find excerpts from their conversation in the slides above, and sign up at Kaje.world to receive the next one!

Sharleen Chidiac is a New York City-based artist working across dance, music, and video. She is a co-founder of PAGEANT, an artist-run performance space in Brooklyn. She has shown work at PAGEANT, Judson Memorial Church, and BAM Fisher, and was a Spring 2025 resident at the Chocolate Factory Theater. Sharleen is also the lead singer of an art-rock band, voyeur.

Max Ludlow is an artist who facilitates broadcasts with Montez Press Radio. by @windy.500

Signal to Noise: a column by @windy.500 🔊

“What’s troubling me right now is this sense that between fan-botting, digital marketing, streaming monopolies, and exorbitant ticket prices, the experience of being a music listener is legitimately suffocating. I’ve gone to some incredible shows in the past month, but it feels like the returns are diminishing. Everyone’s holding out for bigger releases and shows and tours and paychecks that will make the endless grind worth the investment, but it’s hard to see if that’s coming. What I hope comes next is a serious reappraisal of local music. All of this has made the importance of building actual community and working in public more evident. I straight up think we need an industry-wide moratorium on signing bands that have played less than 25 shows, only have one album, and have never needed to function as their own management in a serious way. That’s not an indictment of strong, buzzy artists that quickly find their footing: they just need a chance to try some things and fail before someone puts a life-altering contract in front of them.”

Signal to Noise : a column by @windy.500 🎹

“I’ve recently started taking piano lessons again. I stopped when I was in fourth or fifth grade—shortly after my first recital, where I dueted the Raiders of the Lost Ark theme with my teacher and basically gave up halfway through in front of an audience of 30 other students and their immediate families. I loved the Hanon exercise book: bouncing, repetitive, scalar motions up and down the piano that felt to me more like playing games with my fingers than learning how to play music. The harmony majorly opened my mind’s eye at an early age and made music feel inseparable from the visual world. I’d imagine rabbits bouncing down woodland pathways with a childlike sense of wonder, that in some ways, I feel I’ve never lost. Unfortunately, I was much more interested in video games than music at the time, and my piano lesson was scheduled for Saturday mornings, when new episodes of Pokemon the animated series aired. I gave up piano then, but I do remember a painful twist of jealousy when an elementary school friend mentioned they’d recently learned a song using the sustain pedals (which I had been forbidden to touch)”
