The largest grand cru in Chablis at 26ha, Les Clos is widely regarded as the primus inter pares. Located on single, steep slope on the left bank of the Serein river and with a south-west exposition, it was the first vineyard to be planted by the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Martin de Tours who owned land in the region since a donation in the year 867. Domaine Jean-Paul & Benoît Droin has 1.42ha spread around the grand cru.

The Droin family’s history as vignerons in Chablis stretches back to 1620, a legacy now in its 14th generation with the dynamic Benoît Droin at the helm. From 26.5ha of vineyards, the domaine produces a remarkable collection of 16 wines that includes Petit Chablis, Chablis, 9 premiers crus, and 5 grands crus.

Pure, finely etched aromas of white stone fruit, confit lemon, roasted almond, crushed stone, and acacia flowers. The palate is creamy, dense, layered —white peach, Granny Smith, Nashi pear, grapefruit, honey, nougatine, marzipan— with flinty streaks and vibrant acidity driving a long, saline finish. Still youthful, this 2017 Les Clos is already captivating with its poised tension and understated power. It wraps richness in ethereal elegance, slowly revealing crystalline fruit and mineral complexity. Superb now, yet clearly destined for more 🤩🥂

Have you tasted Charmes-Chambertin❓

Charmes-Chambertin is a 31-hectare east-facing Grand Cru vineyard sitting at around 270 metres above sea level. Its name comes from the hornbeam trees —charmes in French— that once covered many Burgundy hillsides before vines were planted. Hornbeam produced one of Europe’s hardest woods and was traditionally used for cart wheels, ox yokes and farming tools. Geantet-Pansiot’s 0.45-ha parcel, planted in 1964, sits in one of the finest parts of the vineyard, bordering Griotte-Chambertin, where the soils are redder and shallower.

The domaine’s own motto says it all: ‘Être sobre, c’est boire bon’ — ‘To be sober is to drink well’. I couldn’t agree more. Founded in 1954 when Edmond Geantet married Bernadette Pansiot, the domaine has been run by Vincent Geantet since 1989, after joining the family estate in 1977. Since 2006, he’s been joined by his son Fabien and daughter Emilie.

Focused nose of bright red and black fruit, spice, damp earth, and dried flowers. Leaner palate, with blackberry, raspberry, cherry, plum, game, truffle, cinnamon, and mineral-tinged undergrowth. Crisp acidity and sleek tannins propel a long, punchy finish. This is the domaine’s style in full force: dense, muscular, impeccably balanced —structure that holds firm yet never overwhelms the fruit. Weightless in presence, weighty in argument: a compelling reminder that Charmes-Chambertin remains seriously underrated 🤩🍷

First mentioned in 1633, the Sociando-Mallet we know today is the creation of Jean Gautreau, who purchased the estate in 1969 when it was in a state of deplorable neglect. A visionary defined by sheer determination, Gautreau single-handedly elevated his property to stardom, producing overachieving wines that clearly rival classified growth quality. He passed away in October 2019, leaving his daughter Sylvie, who has managed the estate since 2015, as the new standard-bearer of this remarkable legacy.

Dark fruits, graphite, stone, cedar, smoke, earth, arresting from the first strike. The palate is silk over steel: concentrated blackcurrant, cherry, herbs, liquorice, and pepper, grounded in savoury earth. Polished, powerful, never heavy. Vibrant acidity and fine tannins carry a finish that pulses. Less layered than the great vintages, but at 20 years old, this 2006 is utterly compelling, and built to stay that way 🤩🍷

The L.V. (Long Vieillissement / Long Ageing) edition of Clos des Goisses is the rarest bottling from the site, with only a few hundred bottles released. A blend of 70% pinot noir and 30% chardonnay, Philipponnat’s 1998 L.V. was disgorged in March 2023 —25 years post-harvest— with a dosage of 4.25 g/L.

Clos des Goisses is a 5.5ha walled vineyard owned by Philipponnat since 1935. It’s the largest walled vineyard in Champagne and sits on the steepest, at an incline of up to 45°, south-facing slopes on chalky soil in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, overlooking River Marne. ‘Gois’ or ‘Goisse’ in local dialect means a very steep slope.

Dried pear, apricot preserve, and orange peel intertwine with white chocolate, delicate florals, and soft spices, touched by a trace of truffle. The palate is pure and ripe, revealing umami-laden juiciness and a delicious sweet-saline tension, underpinned by chalky lift and amber fruit richness. In the Gascon dialect, Cos means ‘hill of pebbles’. The estate is named after Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel, who inherited the property in 1791. He expanded the vineyard and, in 1811, commissioned the striking oriental-style buildings that still serve as the estate’s cellars today —inspired by his trading ventures in Africa, India, and the Far East. The modern identity of Cos d’Estournel was largely shaped by Bruno Prats, who ran the 91-hectare estate from 1971 until 2000, before its sale to Michel Reybier, who undertook extensive modernisation.

This Cos is a study in controlled brilliance. Dark fruit and earthy spice collide with an savoury undercurrent —blackberry, wild strawberry, truffle— all carried on a palate of uncommon poise: dense yet light, lush yet laser-focused. It’s vibrant and confident with a powerful sense of identity: opulent, energetic, yet noticeably sleeker than past vintages. I’ll admit there was a period in the early 2000s when I felt the wines had become a little too extracted for my taste. But over the last decade Cos has returned to exactly the style I love. That tension, abundance leashed in discipline, is what makes it so compelling. Just entering its prime, it’s sensational now, and built to unfurl even greater complexity for decades 🤩🍷

Situated at the southern end of Beaune beside Pommard, Clos des Mouches is a 25.2ha premier cru planted on clay, limestone and marl soils with an east-southeast exposure. The vineyard takes its name from the beehives that once stood here, with ‘mouches à miel’, or honey flies, inspiring the name.
.
It was one of Maurice Drouhin’s first vineyard purchases during the 1920s and remains one of the estate’s flagship vineyards today. Joseph Drouhin owns the largest holding with 14 ha divided equally between Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
.
The wine opens with black cherry, sweet dark berries, thyme, smoke, espresso and subtle game notes. The palate is concentrated yet beautifully focused, combining pure fruit with fine tannins and impressive mineral definition. Rather than delicacy, this 2016 offers depth, energy and character. It’s one of the bottles that continually reminds me why Clos des Mouches deserves its outstanding reputation 🤩🍷

For all my devotion to Dom Pérignon Plénitude 2, I seldom turn to the house’s standard release. Yet there are vintages —and 2015 is a striking case— where the standard release so effortlessly marries balance with breathtaking precision that I find myself utterly won over, despite my usual preferences.
.
Bright, zesty, and precisely etched, this champagne layers spiced orchard fruits, caramelised apple, candied orange zest, and a subtle flinty smokiness —all propelled by a mousse of exceptional finesse. The palate hits that sweet spot between ripe and lean: succulent, yet athletic, with chalky texture lending grip and cut rather than weight. This is Dom Pérignon at its most vibrant and driven, delivering energy and nuance in equal measure 🤩🍾🥂

Blend of 51% pinot noir and 49% chardonnay. Dosage is 4.5g/L.

Château Lagrange 2008 shows why Saint-Julien can be so compelling with time in bottle. The estate’s modern story is not just the 1855 classification. It is the reconstruction that began after Suntory bought the property in 1983, when Marcel Ducasse redirected the vineyard through drainage work, replanting, and stricter selection.

The 2008 season gave Lagrange a different kind of test. Rain and disease pressure marked the early part of the year, but dry weather in September and October allowed Cabernet Sauvignon to finish ripening on the gravel rises. The final wine is mostly Cabernet, with Merlot and a small amount of Petit Verdot, and only a severe selection went into the Grand Vin.

At this age, the wine is not only about fruit. Cassis and plum remain, but cedar, tobacco, graphite, dried herbs, and firm Saint-Julien tannin now carry the wine. The cool year left freshness. The late harvest gave enough ripeness. The site gave the wine its line.

Thomas Jefferson ranked Lagrange in the third tier of his personal favourites during his 1787 Bordeaux visit as U.S. envoy to France, decades before its official 1855 classification as a Third Growth. After WWII, however, Lagrange failed to live up to its cru classé reputation. That changed in 1983 when Japan’s Suntory Group acquired it. Today, Lagrange has reclaimed its place as a Third Growth, producing wines of refined precision and elegance —all while offering exceptional value.

On Montalcino’s southwest hills, Tenuta Luce was born in the early 1990s from the vision of Vittorio Frescobaldi and Robert Mondavi —the first estate to blend Merlot with Sangiovese. Its name, ‘light’, honours Santo Spirito’s altar in Florence, a 16th-century church built on Frescobaldi-donated land. Fully-owned by the Frescobaldis since 2004, the estate now comprises 249ha, 88 planted to vine: Sangiovese on high sandstone-limestone slopes, Merlot on lower clay soils.

Raspberry, blackberry, liquorice, toasted sandalwood, baking spice, and resin converge in this dense yet lively red. This 2021 Luce is cool and sleek, light on its feet despite its heft, buoyed by a bright spine of freshness. Fine-grained tannins and brisk acidity carry impeccable balance through the mid-palate, unfurling into a long, juicy, layered finish. The result is a wine of real distinction, where Sangiovese’s elegance meets Merlot’s generosity 🤩🍷

Located in Saint-Pargoire, at 35km southeast of Montpellier, and created in 1982 by Marlène Soria, Peyre Rose is an organically-farmed domaine with 24ha of vineyards. Syrah accounts for 80% of red varietals, with grenache noir, mourvèdre and carignan playing supporting roles, and small plantings of white grapes include rolle, roussanne, and viognier. The domaine produces iconic wines that are going through a long maturing process in large casks before being bottled, and usually released after 9-10 years.

Peyre Rose shifted its red cuvées from the Coteaux du Languedoc AOC to the Vin de France classification starting with the 2011 vintage due to prolonged legal and bureaucratic conflicts with French wine appellation authorities.
.
A complex weave of poached fruits, game, mulling spices, leather, smoky earth, and garrigue herbs. The palate follows with red berry, prune, date, dark chocolate, tapenade, and liquorice, all drifting into a long, seductive finish. At 16, it’s vibrant and deep, poised and assured —southern to the core, but the old muscle has mellowed; the showiness is gone. What’s left is pure, weightless elegance. Extraordinary for a Syrah-Grenache. Clos des Cistes is, in every sense, enthralling 🤩🍷

Established in the village of Gratallops, 50km west of Tarragona, Álvaro Palacios was among the 5 pioneering vintners who landed in Priorat in 1989, set on reviving the region’s forgotten old-vine Garnatxa. Alongside the Consejo Regulador, he lobbied successfully to legalise village-name labelling, a ban he helped overturn. Today, Priorat boasts 12 Vi de Vila appellations, the first release being Álvaro’s ‘Gratallops Vi de Vila’ in 2007.

Dark berries, cedar, violet, and lavender rise with a herbal snap, while vanilla and tobacco meld with fruit toward a bold, rewarding finish. On the palate, it’s seamless and well-proportioned, gentle tannins with a spicy citrus lift, firm yet supple. It carries red-fruit elegance that recalls a top-tier pinot noir, though this is garnacha at its purest, most vibrant, and most commanding. Smoky, mineral-edged, and irresistibly moreish, it lingers and invites another pour 🤩🍷
