Is Krug a house or a grower? Olivier Krug doesn't think the label matters.

Krug is a Champagne house, founded in Reims in 1843. But Joseph Krug's idea was to work like a grower: vinify plot by plot, then build the most generous blend he could. Today Krug also owns two walled single vineyards, Clos du Mesnil and Clos d'Ambonnay.

Our Pre-Fête interview with Olivier Krug, plus Arthur Larmandier of @larmandier.bernier, premieres on YouTube today at 6PM ET. Link in bio.

La Fête du Champagne returns to New York City October 14 to 17 and Chicago October 22 to 24. @lafetenyc

For years in Champagne, you were expected to pick a side: the great houses or the small growers.

Peter Liem and Daniel Johnnes built La Fête du Champagne on refusing to choose. Every producer is there by invitation only, and each one sends a principal: the owner, the family, the Chef du Cave.

That first room was a little awkward. Today it's one of the most anticipated weeks in Champagne.

La Fête du Champagne returns to New York City, October 14 to 17.

If you showed up with six people, Donn Chappellet might suddenly remember he had to walk his dog.

Cyril Chappellet, CEO and Chairman of @chappellet_winery, describes his father as a strong introvert. Come alone, and you would sit with Donn for three hours and maybe go to lunch. Bring six people, and the dog needed out and he would not come back in. Cyril's guess: raising six kids and all their friends left his dad wanting quiet.

A founder who preferred one good conversation to six at once.

Are you a one-on-one person or a full table person?

"I'm now at 200,000 cases, and I'm not sure whether we will ever get this made."

Cyril Chappellet remembers Louis Martini Sr. standing up mid-dinner at the Chappellet family table, walking around behind him and putting his hands on his shoulders. Then came the case numbers: Donn Chappellet's goal was 5,000 to 15,000 cases. Martini's winery was at 200,000.

Cyril says his father's rule was to let quality be your guide, and that the family has kept to it. Numbers as Cyril remembers them.

Quality or volume: which wins in wine?

If you ever find a Chappellet bottle with no vintage date on it, it is the 1968.

Cyril Chappellet, CEO and Chairman of @chappellet_winery, explains why. The first vintage was crushed at Robert Mondavi Winery after Mondavi called Donn Chappellet on a shared party line and offered his tanks and presses. The barrels then went to Jack Davies's caves at Schramsberg, and Joe Heitz got involved too. Cyril says the legality of moving the wine between wineries is why the label carries no date.

No money changed hands, he says. His verdict on the bottle: a good wine, but "in the shadows" of the 1969.

Rare bottles deserve a record. The Wine Centric Show is presented by @InVintory , where you can scan a label or search a database of more than 2 million wines, then see exactly where the bottle sits in your cellar in 3D. Code WINECENTRIC gets 25% off one year of InVintory Premium at invintory.com.

Have you ever held a bottle like this? Tell us below.

Full conversation with Cyril Chappellet, will be LIVE in Youtube at 6PM Today. Stay tuned.

It's International Grenache Day! 🍇

If you caught our episode with Nicole and Xavier Rolet of @chenebleuwine, you already know why that matters to us. There's a moment where the two of them break down Grenache's role at Chêne Bleu, the backbone of Abélard, their flagship red grown 550 meters up in a UNESCO biosphere in Provence. Not the grape that gets the glory. The one doing the real work.

If you haven't watched or listened yet, the full episode with Nicole and Xavier is live now on YouTube and everywhere you get your podcasts. Link in bio.

And don't get too comfortable, because next Tuesday we're back with Cyril Chappellet of @chappellet_winery, talking mountain fruit, Pritchard Hill, and what it takes to keep a family winery going into a third generation.

Pour something Grenache-forward this weekend and tell us what's in your glass.

Drink deliciously.

South Africa's signature grape almost got pulled up with the weeds.

In 1925, a Stellenbosch professor crossed Pinot Noir with Cinsaut (then called Hermitage) chasing Pinot's elegance in a vine tough enough to handle the Cape. He planted 4 seedlings in his garden, then left the university. The garden went wild. A clean-up crew was sent in to clear it out.

A young lecturer walked past at exactly the right moment, recognized what was growing there, and saved the cuttings before they were gone for good.

That's the plant behind Pinotage. And no estate has carried it further than @kanonkopwineestate.

Louw Strydom (@louw_strydom), their COO, breaks the whole story down on-site. Would love to bring more of this to The Wine Centric Show, Kanonkop, let's talk. 🍷

@wosawines this is your story too.

Some of the glass in this room predates the Roman Empire. Not exaggerating.

Underneath Glenelly Estate in Stellenbosch sits a glass museum with pieces dating back to the 1st century BC. Two thousand years of glassmaking under one roof.

A few steps away, the Chardonnay is doing something almost as old. It ferments in a wooden tank shaped so the yeast never settles, just keeps moving in a slow, constant current. That's not decoration. That's what gives the wine its texture.

History under your feet. Craft in the tank. Same estate.

@glenellyestate you're sitting on more than good wine. 🍇

Went on safari to see lions. Ended up just as impressed by what was in the glass.

This is Leeuwenkuil Family Vineyards Chenin Blanc, from the Swartland, South Africa, poured mid-safari at Lalibela Wildlife Reserve. Big Five in one direction, seriously good wine in the other.

Altitude, safari, wherever we are. Always drink good wine.

@leeuwenkuilwine @lalibelawildlifereserve, this is exactly the kind of moment we'd love to feature properly.

Altitude is no excuse. Always drink good wine🍷

Popped a bottle of Boschendal on top of Table Mountain today. 3,558 feet up, no glass anywhere, so straight from the bottle it was.

Someone told me altitude actually messes with wine bubbles, less air pressure up there so they get bigger and more aggressive. No idea if that's why this hit the way it did, but this Cap Classique from Franschhoek, South Africa did not disappoint.

@courtneymcooper was right there for it. @capeclassicswines @boschendal , come see what your wine can do at 3,558 feet. Would love to have you both on board for something more.
