I should have posted this at the beginning of February. A toast to finishing my reviews for @winecompanion 2023 guide. After the saddest and worst year of my life in 2021, it seems there are rays of light and flickers of joy in 2022 despite world conflicts and all the woes. Lots of changes this year, I feel it could be a good one. Watch this space. More G&Ts with my best buddy. He's not drinking G&Ts being a dog so I have his share too. Salute. In these strange times that is a global pandemic, I’ve decided to taste a selection of wines I buy - yes fancy that a wine writer buying booze. I buy a lot of Italian wine in particular and since I can’t travel to Bella Italia or even beyond Melbourne at the moment, let’s travel through wine, starting with @az.agr.fontodi every year I buy an allocation from this excellent Chianti Classico producer, a certified organic estate. I respect its attention to detail and especially the work in the vineyards, where all great wine is made. Cracked open a 2017 Chianti Classico, cork has behaved, and this so bright and youthful. Excellent sangiovese aromas and flavours. Earthy, spicy, loads of spiced cherries and pomegranate, bright acidity with textural slightly gritty tannins. Perfect Saturday night wine with a non Tuscan dish of homemade bolognese. Best match. 94 points for those obsessed by points. Great for at least five years.
