Wingate Studio is pleased to announce Swoop, a new series of unique aquatint etchings, each hand-colored by the artist. Barbara Takenaga’s fourth project with the studio, these wildly exuberant, chromatically rich works combine the structure, precision, and rigor of printmaking with the freedom, whimsy, and chance that characterize the artist’s singular painterly practice. These effervescent works feature crisp, curving lines that frame the titular psychedelic “swoop” that lies beneath the bursting, sperm-like forms that radiate from the left side of each composition. Each iteration of this innovative project is at once cellular and cosmic, dynamic and static. On the one hand, Takenaga captures the animated movement we expect to find when examining living organisms under a microscope, and, on the other hand, she offers a snapshot of celestial bodies and fragments moving at the speed of light. Takenaga echoes the dreaminess of the 1960s counter-culture’s fascination with lava lamps while celebrating the micro/macro visual structures of science.

A glimpse into our STEEL-FACING process. This is an electroplating process that deposits a thin layer of steel, (iron) onto the copper plate. The steel protects the delicate copper plate from wear during long print runs and prevents the copper from oxidizing keeping the colors bright and true.

In this video Leo and James carefully clean plates and mount hardware allowing for the electrical current to travel to the plate. These plates are being faced for our forthcoming edition with Didier William @dueyart

NEW RELEASE

Wingate Studio is pleased to announce Violet Orbit Motion, a new, richly layered color etching by Brooklyn-based, Nigerian British artist Tunji Adeniyi-Jones. This is the artist’s third project with the studio. The image’s chromatically saturated figures and foliage combine to form an intricate composition that appears to pulsate with repeated, cyclical motion. As the artist explains, “Printmaking has developed into a crucial aspect of my practice, and this new print is no exception. Largely inspired by a series of oil paintings I have been making in the studio, this print has enabled me to build off of some existing ideas and push them further.”

We would like to thank everyone who joined us last week to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Wingate Studio and Peter Pettengill’s retirement as the founding director. We were humbled by the sharing of kind words, memories, and stories during last weekend’s celebration. As James Pettengill steps in as director to carry on the impressive legacy Peter created, Wingate Studio is grateful to its community for enabling our success over the past 40 years and into the future. taken in Wingate Studio by @wingatestudio
