This Thursday, October 8th - strangejane (@wingbodywing) takes the stage at @2220arts.
strangejane is the evolving sonic persona of 신다인/Jane Shin, a Korean multimedia artist and musician based in Los Angeles. Their compositions blend their background as a classical performer with a love of modern music-making tools, using each of these modalities to tear down the walls between the audience and Shin’s human vulnerability.
Each of their performances is unique and not to be missed.

strangejane joins a full lineup of electronic pioneers, with performances from tp Dutchkiss, deep glens, and Stephen Lee Clark.

strangejane was birthed from desire. desire to explore how machines make music under pressure. the desire was first conceived as a reaction to pressures my younger self faced to become a classical performance machine......which failed spectacularly

the sound of failure is so dear to me! my child, my childhood

the opportunity to collaborate with machines of our present is nothing short of a miracle. yet my reliance on them so far has functioned as a mask. improvising with the machinic, i sought often to occlude the vulnerability of my human from the audience before me

i am now interested in performing as my self. i hope you will join me in getting to know me!

thirty spokes converge on a single hub,
yet the hole is what makes the wheel turn.
mold clay and water into a vessel,
yet the hollow is what makes it useful.
cut doors and windows for a room,
yet empty space is what makes it livable.
now consider: we make what is to use what is not.

we started visiting the drains of los angeles in 2022. we introduced ourselves to the water across different stretches of concrete and pondered what it means to be a guest on unceded land. the grief of the river and our own travel together.

I made a tune for each of your eyes. for your left: orbital, for your right: memory of an egg

I would be happy if you listened after breakfast while rotating an egg with your mind. thank you

"Sleep like the down elevator's
imitation of memory lapse.

Then early light.

Why were you born, voyager?
One is not born for a reason,
though there is a skein of causes.
Out of yellowish froth,
cells began to divide, or so they say,
and feed on sunlight,
for no reason.
After that life wanted life.

You are awake now?
I am awake now."
