From fighting discrimination and advocating for fair housing to preserving Seattle’s most iconic landmarks like Pike Place Market and Pioneer Square, Wing’s vision shaped the city we love today.

In honor of his 100th birthday, we’re celebrating all year long with special events, educational programs, and more!

Let’s celebrate Wing Luke’s enduring legacy together! Follow the links in our bio to learn more.

Stephanie Mai Designs 🪷🐉🍜  @stephaniemaidesigns 「 Marketplace’s Local Artist Spotlight 」

The latest showcase in our gift shop highlights Stephanie Mai Designs ✨ Her art is a colorful blend of culture, food, and our favorite little guys, like Kirby and Jimothy. You can find prints, stickers, and keychains from her now available in the Marketplace!

Swipe to read more about Stephanie’s art in our captions ➡️➡️➡️💗 Come by the Marketplace to see our featured spotlight of her items 🌸

「 How would you describe your art? 」

🪷: Stephanie Mai Designs initially started off as a hobby to make cute things and quickly became an opportunity to express my love of color, culture, and community. My digital illustrations started off as bold and loud expressions of love for my Vietnamese heritage, pop culture, and food. Now, they’ve jumped from the screen and became framed prints in people’s homes, wearable art in the form of unique apparel, and overall became ways for my community and I to share our mutual love of art and joyful expression. Vibrant colors, bold lines, and distinctive shapes guide my creative process. My art is not just an extension of myself, but also a visually loud voice that aims to help cut through the slog of AI generated content online and bring joy to new spaces.

「 What inspires the themes of your work? 」

🪷: Some key themes in my work include a unique mixture of Vietnamese culture, pop culture, and food. Drawing from my background as a second-gen Vietnamese American, I love finding new ways to incorporate my culture into art. For example, I draw Pokemon with lowkey and delicious non-mainstream Vietnamese food so that people can learn about the myriads of other amazing dishes other than phở or spring rolls.

「 What does art and expression mean to you? 」

🪷: In this time of generative AI plagiarism and automation, human-made design is more important than ever. Art and the act of creating is not just an expression nor practice. It is an intentional method of human connection, voicing your values, and pushing back against “automating” art.

「 What are you excited to work on next? 」

🪷: I’m excited to make my first hoodie! I’ve been having by @winglukemuseum

With a special shout out to Seattle’s Halau Hula O Napualani (HHON) Hawaiian School of Dance! This week, we’re visiting the Wing Luke Museum in seattle, where the community is central to the experience.

Here, you can check out their Lost and Found exhibit, which brings together artists exploring cultural resistance. As well as DISplace, which centers around Native Hawaiian experiences and artists that explore what it means to navigate identity, home, and displacement.

With the NARM reciprical membership, benefits you can visit museums like the Wing Luke and experience more stories from across the region.

To become a NARM/ROAM member, visit tacomaartmuseum.org/membership, or stop by the front desk at TAM!

The Wing Luke Museum honors Lonnie G. Bunch III, who recently announced his retirement as Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, on his decades of service to the national museum field. We are grateful for his steadfast and courageous leadership at the Smithsonian, and for championing the diversity and complexity of American culture and history in our nation’s museums throughout his tremendous career. He has led by example by preserving the intellectual integrity of the Smithsonian during a time when cultural institutions are under attack. We applaud him in his work to create a stronger museum field, supporting the mission of museums like the Wing Luke Museum, to embed the full breadth of our nation’s stories into the cultural fabric of our country’s historical narrative. by @winglukemuseum
