Today I tested 3 parawings to compare them, a double skin, a single skin and a hybrid wing. It was very interesting, as the wind was very gusty. 10 to 14 m/s when I went in, with the Rotterdam harbor and windmills blocking this spot a bit aswell. As the wind picked up just before I went in, I was afraid the range of wing, a PPC Orbit 4.5, an Altis Focus 4.0 and Altis Hybrid 4.2 would be too big. Altis being the new brand we sell at Wingsurfer and the first time out on them! First I took the biggest out, the PPC Orbit 4.5. This is the double skin parawing of which the promise is you can use it without harness lines. Very eager to find out if this is true in such conditions. I already tested it in low winds and noticed it was very gentle on the arms. Now in this wind range, even in the strongest gusts it still was going easy. There was not one moment I felt like I had to use a harness. I think this is a big plus! What I also really liked was the range and constant pull it provided. Something I miss in singleskins. To get on foil in between gusts I would pull the Pall system. Basically it turns a bit into a singleskin parawing. Then in the strongest gusts, you release this. And is a full on double skin parawing. Altough very easy on the arms. This is the most technical parawing of the 3. Sometimes the tips want to fold inward when going too much upwind. The reason might be the pal system, because when released, it probably has its best intended shape. Then you can push to go upwind more I suppose. For A double skin parawing, so basically double the material and having air inside, it stashes actually pretty good. I would recommend this parawing to people who really want something that is light on the arms, especially at gusty spots this one feels special.
