1st prize · Cooperative Housing Jungholz, ZurichCredits: @lina.community Three simple timber rows form an inhabited frame around the communal green on the slope of the Käferberg. As its urban counterpart, a new square opens the settlement to the Obsthaldenstrasse; two converted existing houses become the community pavilion. 1st prize · Europan 18 (Vitoria Gasteiz Site) - Care BlanketCredits: altnew, Agustin Azar, Egor Gaydukov & Uliana ZohmnirCare Blanket proposes a way of re-inhabiting the existing city. In a context marked by obsolescence and climate urgency, the project argues that transforming what is already built can become an opportunity to redefine the contemporary conditions of dwelling.The proposal was developed for Bustaldea, a 57-unit social housing complex built in the 1960s in Vitoria-Gasteiz, where more than half the housing stock dates from 1940-1980 and shows a high degree of obsolescence. Rather than demolish this accumulated material and social capital, the project treats the buildings as infrastructure to be updated through a strategy based on care. A new prefabricated envelope of cork and timber is mechanically fixed to the existing facade, improving thermal performance and expanding each dwelling's spatial possibilities, while allowing progressive installation without displacing the 15 families still living there. The intervention works at different scales at once: reactivating collective outdoor space at the urban level, upgrading energy performance at the building level, and improving ventilation, light and flexibility within each unit. With five identical blocks, Bustaldea also offers an exceptional test case for a replicable prototype, positioning Care Blanket as an open rehabilitation platform for similar postwar housing stock across the region.The project was awarded First Prize by the Europan 18 jury and is now being advanced with the Basque Government and the City Council of Vitoria-Gasteiz.Care Blanket was developed by altnew — Agustín Azar, Egor Gaydukov and Uliana Zohmnir — with collaborator Nicolás Schusterman. altnew is an architecture office based in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Weimar (Germany). contact: info@altnew.space / instagram.com/altnew.spaceJust won a competition? 1st prize · School extension, BellmundCredits: sara_gelibter_architecte1st Prize | School Renovation and Extension, Bellmund, SwitzerlandThe project builds upon the existing qualities of the site: a distinctive school complex from the 1970s, a generous landscaped setting, and exceptional views towards the Bernese Alps, Lake Biel and the Chasseral.Rather than replacing the existing buildings, the proposal works carefully with what is already there. The school complex is preserved, reorganised and complemented by precisely positioned new volumes. The extension reinforces the campus as a clear public landmark within the village, while creating new connections, outdoor learning spaces and shared places for pupils, teachers and the wider community.A new multi-level school building responds sensitively to the topography and frames a more clearly defined playground. The removal of the plinth generates an open and permeable urban landscape, connecting surrounding pedestrian routes, green areas and building ground floors into a shared public space. The composition is complemented by a parking structure located at the edge of the site, concentrating mobility functions and enabling an intensified communal life at ground level. The careful refurbishment of the towers expands housing capacities, activates the base of the buildings and opens the rooftops to residents. The proposal establishes a framework for long-term adaptation of the site and the emergence of a new urban centre defined by everyday activities, sharing and diversity of use.Just won a competition? One of Selected Winners · BODRUM HISTORIC WINDMILLS NATIONAL COMPETITIONCredits: @kaat_architecture_urbanism DeğirmenburnuBodrum, Muğla, Türkiye | Idea competition, 2026 | Client: Bodrum MunicipalityOn a bare, rocky headland above Bodrum stand seven abandoned stone windmills and an old watchtower. They have been part of the city's skyline for centuries — first as working mills that ground the wheat of this coast, later as ruins slowly worn down by wind and salt. The brief asked what should be done with them.The usual answers are to rebuild them or to leave them alone. Rebuilding all seven would turn the headland into a historical theme park and erase centuries of quiet decay in a single day; leaving everything untouched would freeze the place. Neither felt honest to a site whose real power lies in never having been decided.So the project restores the passage of time rather than the buildings. Each mill is kept at a different stage of its own life: one remains a half-collapsed ruin, several stay as roofless stone cylinders open to the sky, one is given its roof back but not its sails, and two are made to work again — sails turning, still grinding local wheat for an annual harvest festival. Walking between them, a visitor moves through several hundred years at once.Almost nothing new is built. A single roof rises out of the slope as a continuation of the hillside, low enough that it hides none of the mills from the city below, and beneath it runs a gently climbing open-air exhibition path up to the tower and the sea view. The only other additions are light platforms on thin legs, low stone lines marking each mill's ground, and a small café at the far end.The rest is invisible: rainwater led into traditional underground cisterns, drought-tolerant planting, cars kept off the ridge, and deliberately very little lighting — leaving one of the last stretches of this coast where the sky is still dark enough to see stars.Team: KAAT Architecture + UrbanismJust won a competition? An organically shaped curtain wall follows the contours of the landscape, while precast concrete panels incorporate reclaimed brick fragments, embedding the site's material memory within a circular design approach. Conceived as a living matrix, the landscape extends the existing tree canopy through a mosaic of native habitats that promote biodiversity, ecological stormwater management, and natural regeneration. The building reorganizes the location and, with a representative forecourt and generously designed green spaces, formulates a concise address in the urban space.The building cubature is based on two overlapping squares, from which a precisely proportioned building structure with a distinctive cut in the entrance area is created. A calmly structured, rhythmic facade gives the building a timeless and dignified expression that conveys openness and transparency.The internal organization follows a clear functional structure that differentiates different user groups while keeping them clearly organized. A spacious foyer forms the central orientation element and creates open, barrier-free access to justice. This private courtyard, densely planted and surrounded by a peristyle, becomes the project’s central hub — serving as a cool island, a rainwater management feature, and a shared living space for residents and Escale users alike.Ground floor: Escale activities (café-restaurant, leisure center, administration), each with its own access and schedule; the performance hall is more autonomous, located to the south. Upper floors: 25 LADA apartments served by a generous exterior walkway (coursive) opening onto the courtyard, designed as a genuine meeting place. The apartments, arranged in a diagonal enfilade, offer varied views and sunlight exposure, with private loggias and a shared laundry room on the 2nd floor.Wood-concrete system: wood post-and-beam primary structure, prefabricated wood-concrete secondary structure (composite pre-slabs with exposed concrete underside). Prefabrication reduces construction time and disruption while improving precision and durability. The compact, rectangular building volume complements the existing ice rink and the indoor pool designed by Ernst Gisel, forming a cohesive ensemble and marking the entrance to the sports facility at the corner of Spielweg and Breitenaustrasse. The main entrance is centrally located between the indoor pool, outdoor pool, and ice sports area, perfectly connecting all facilities. At the same time, the positioning of the building enhances the park-like quality of the outdoor pool and creates a clear separation from the adjacent traffic and service areas. Access for deliveries and the underground parking garage is designed to minimize conflicts, strictly separating motorized traffic from pedestrians and cyclists.The new building is designed as a striking timber structure set on a solid, exposed concrete base. Two prominent infrastructure docks form the structural and functional backbone, while a clean timber framework allows for large spans and flexible floor plans. The construction remains visible both inside and out, shaping the warm, natural atmosphere of the building.
