Utility Dive reported today (Oct. 16): private donors gave about $333 million for the White House ballroom. A spreadsheet tracked 67 donors at $10,000 or more. NextEra Energy gave $4 million while federal regulators weigh its bid to acquire Dominion Energy — a deal needing federal approval — and its work on a $100 billion Energy Department hub. BlackRock reportedly gave $5 million. Rep. Jim Himes warned defense-contractor donors on Sept. 28 that Congress may seek records on whether gifts were linked to contracts or access. No proof of a quid pro quo has surfaced — say that plainly.

In 1773, Parliament rigged the tea trade for the East India Company, its favored company, and colonists dumped the tea. In our view, today's version is favor that seems to follow the money, whichever party holds power.

Nobody is coming to save us from pay-to-play.

Do this today: look up the ballroom donor list, write down which donors need something from Washington, and ask your House member at house.gov to demand a full public accounting.

Picked by hand.

An orchard doesn't care about your schedule, and neither does a childhood. Both get harvested in a short season, and both are better when your own hands did the work. Store-bought can feed a family, but it can't teach one — a kid learns where food comes from standing on a ladder next to her mother, not from a screen. Some things you don't outsource. Nobody is coming to save us — what's picked, cooked, and raised in your house is on you.

Keep the fire lit.

A kid doesn't learn what home is from a lecture. He learns it watching his dad split wood, stoke the stove, and keep the house warm without being asked twice. The fire is the lesson: tend what matters, every day, especially when it's cold and nobody's clapping for it. Nobody is coming to save us — the warmth in that house is your job.

Scripps News reviewed FEC records (Oct. 15): GEO Group, the nation's largest owner of immigration detention centers, is also one of the biggest corporate donors this midterm. Its subsidiary, GEO Reentry Services, gave $4.4 million to MAGA Inc. and $1.3 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund.

Federal contractors are barred from giving to candidates and committees — the rule exists to prevent pay-to-play. The Campaign Legal Center says companies get around it by giving through a subsidiary that is not itself the contractor, and calls that a major loophole.

GEO and CoreCivic PACs also gave the $10,000 maximum to Rep. Andrew Garbarino, who chairs House Homeland Security, and gave to Sen. Susan Collins and Sen. Ashley Moody — lawmakers on committees that set or oversee this spending.

In 1773, Parliament rigged the tea trade for one favored company, the East India Company, and colonists paid the price. Today's version is a loophole instead of a monopoly — same principle, in our view: rules written so favored companies win either way, whichever party holds power.

Nobody is coming to save us from the side door.

Do this today: go to fec.gov, search GEO Group and CoreCivic, and write down which of your lawmakers took their PAC money before you vote Nov. 3.

Pew Research Center reported today, October 15: the 119th Congress has enacted 121 laws since January 2025 — the second fewest of any Congress in four decades. Only the last Congress did less, at 106 by this point.

By Pew's count, 109 were substantive. The 100th through 110th Congresses averaged 440 laws before Election Day — about twice the output since then.

Congress is now in recess until after the November 3 midterms, with none of the 12 annual spending bills passed by both chambers and funding punted to December 11.

The Declaration listed it plainly: the king had dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly. The Crown shut down colonial legislatures that stood up to it. Today's Congress needs no king — in our view, it dissolves itself, then does more work in lame-duck session after voters can no longer hold it to account. The last Congress passed 61% of its laws that way.

Nobody is coming to save us from an empty Capitol.

Do this today: go to congress.gov, look up what your House member actually passed this term, and bring that record to the ballot box Nov. 3.

On May 17, 1775, 225 farmers in the Coxsackie District of New York signed a pledge never to become slaves to a king. Signing was treason. One of them was my 7th great-grandfather, Peter Souser. He was 75 years old.

They weren't rich men. They were fathers and neighbors who knew nobody was coming to save them.
