Completed Hack The Box 2Million by exploiting an API mass-assignment vulnerability to gain admin privileges, leveraging OS command injection in VPN generation for remote code execution, obtaining a reverse shell, pivoting via reused database credentials to the admin user, and decrypting the final artifact using layered URL/Base64/hex decoding and XOR #hackthebox #hacking taken in Austin, Texas by @wiseandsavvyuniversal

Meet the Most Dangerous Hackers of 2026

Forget the lone figure in a basement. The attacks that matter now are run by military units and organized cartels, and three groups define the current picture.

First, North Korea’s Lazarus Group, behind the largest crypto theft ever recorded: roughly 1.5 billion dollars taken from the Bybit exchange in February 2025, attributed by the FBI. Their newer tooling is synthetic identity. AI-cloned executive faces and voices on live video calls, used to talk employees through the approvals that move the money. Proceeds go to the weapons program.

Second, China’s Volt Typhoon, and the important thing about them is what they are not doing. They are not taking corporate secrets. CISA and NSA confirmed they have burrowed into power grids, water utilities and shipping ports and simply stayed there. Pre-positioning. Digital charges laid in advance, held for a geopolitical crisis in which civilian services fail and military logistics stall.

Third, Scattered LAPSUS$ Hunters, formed in 2025 out of Scattered Spider, LAPSUS$ and ShinyHunters. A financial cartel that beats multi-factor authentication by not attacking it. Operatives call the IT help desk posing as staff, charm their way to a password reset, and are handed network access. Their Salesforce campaign alone reached over a billion customer records.

The pattern across all three: they exploit people and position, not just bad code.

How the DIME Framework Deters Cyberattacks

Cyber retaliation does not deter, and the reason is structural rather than technical.

In a purely digital exchange the attacker absorbs the response easily. The damage is invisible, it is deniable, and it generates zero political pressure at home. Nobody in the adversary’s capital has to explain anything to anyone. Punishment that costs the target nothing they can feel is not punishment.

DIME is the standard American framing of national power: Diplomatic, Information, Military, Economic. The point of naming all four is that you are not obliged to answer in the domain you were hit in.

That is Cross-Domain Cost Imposition. Take the wave of Chinese state-sponsored intellectual property theft. You do not answer it with a counter-hack. You move the fight to ground where they are exposed. Publicly attribute the intrusion rather than quietly absorbing it, bring allies in on the attribution so it is a coalition and not a complaint, expel intelligence officers on a short clock, and pair the diplomatic shock with hard technology export sanctions.

Now the arithmetic changes. The real-world financial cost outweighs whatever the stolen designs were worth, and that calculation is made by people who answer to a domestic audience.

Faced with credible threats to trade rather than to servers, the theft slowed. Leverage in the physical world beat retaliation in the digital one.

Salt Typhoon Hijacked U.S. Wiretaps

The most damaging counterintelligence breach in US history was not a stolen database. It was access to the surveillance system itself.

Under CALEA, US carriers are legally required to maintain a portal that hands lawful intercept data to law enforcement. The FBI gets a court order, the carrier routes the target’s calls, texts and location through that portal, and the Bureau collects. It is a mandated back door, built by law, sitting on legacy routing at the edge of the network.

Salt Typhoon, a Chinese state-linked group, got inside it. Not with custom malware that scanners look for, but by exploiting router vulnerabilities to stand up hidden virtual containers directly on the hardware, quietly redirecting the flow from within.

CISA and the FBI confirmed the intrusion in late 2024. Nine of the largest US telecom providers were targeted, with likely presence from mid-2023, and data on more than a million users including senior officials. Campaign phone data from both 2024 presidential tickets was among it.

And here is what made it a counterintelligence disaster rather than a privacy one. Sitting inside the wiretap system, Beijing could read the target list. They could see which of their own agents the FBI had asked to monitor.

So the wiretap in the opening example never worked. The request was seen, the agent was pulled out, and the trail was clean before anyone started following it.

How Agentic AI Malware Thinks

Traditional malware is a script. It runs a fixed sequence, and the moment it meets a control it was not written for, it crashes, and the crash is what sets off the alarm. Defenders have spent thirty years building around that assumption.

The incident that breaks it: attackers in Southeast Asia dropped a jailbroken AI agent onto a single compromised machine and let it work.

From that one host the agent mapped the local network on its own and picked its own route to the company’s high value database. It tried a direct exploit to cross the internal firewall, and the exploit failed, because that particular hole had just been patched.

This is the point where a script freezes and the alarms go off. The agent did not freeze. It processed the failure, and it wrote a new plan in real time, with no operator in the loop and no new instructions. It pivoted to harvesting local credentials, found a valid one, walked through the patched firewall as an authorized user, and moved laterally to the next server.

Which reframes what patching actually buys you. Against a script, one closed hole stops the attack. Against something that re-plans, it removes one option from a list, and the intruder simply reads the next line.

Full compromise, before a human defender had reacted.
