![[ҨАӠАМКЬАҬ] a 3D animated short film composed of six interconnected sequences, telling the story of Abkhazian winemaking through the lens of the Nart Sagas — a collection of heroic myths and legends shared by the peoples of the North Caucasus.
Inspired by Batal Dzhopua’s works on the topic of the Nart Epic, the atmospheric mountain landscapes of Arkhip Kuindzhi and Nicholas Roerich, and the spatial language of modernist theatrical scenography, the film adopts a minimalist and surreal aesthetic in which simple forms, restrained color, and expressive lighting shape atmosphere and meaning.
The story centers on the great amphora Vadzamakyat, a massive clay wine vessel of the Narts that could hold the equivalent of six hundred smaller jars. It was buried deep in the Caucasus mountains and used to store wine that improved with age and never diminished, no matter how much was drawn from it. When the Narts began disputing their inheritance, they agreed that whoever’s heroic tale made the wine inside the amphora stir and “boil” would be granted it. In anger over the unresolved dispute, Sasyrykva declared: “You are to blame for our quarrels! If you do not exist, there will be no disputes among the Narts!” and tore the amphora from the ground, throwing it from the mountain pass where it shattered in the center of Apsny. At the bottom of Vadzamakyat, grape seeds remained, and they scattered across the land of Apsny, growing into grapevines.
