Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillion Audio for providing me with an ALC of I’ll Watch Your Baby in exchange for an honest review.

I’ll Watch Your Baby’s premise blends supernatural horror, fragmented identity, and community trauma into a story that turns the very real social wound of the sensationalized “welfare queen” Linda Taylor, into the haunting presence of the story’s protagonist, Lottie Taylor.

The atmosphere and conceptual framework of the story are both very strong. The early sections, particularly those centered on Lottie, are vivid and immersive, capturing both the glamour and menace surrounding her character. The atmosphere is so real that I can see the tailored slacks, silk blouses, chunky heels, fur coats, and big hair that women of that era wore when I was a little girl. The voice actress who narrates Lottie’s point-of-view is amazing. She is gritty, hilarious, and believable.

The underlying supernatural tone is also well done. The nuanced details that Neena Viel weaves throughout that portion of her novel demonstrate that she is well researched and culturally knowledgeable. I enjoyed the theme of the flies and the creepy factor of Lottie’s relationship with the supernatural and how it slowly unravels as the reader gains understanding.

Unfortunately, the novel ultimately struggles with pacing and characterization. A prolonged horror sequence in the latter half becomes so overwritten and emotionally overextended that it significantly weakened my investment in the story. The mythology surrounding Lottie remained interesting throughout, many of the supporting characters felt underdeveloped and emotionally flat. By the end of the novel, I found myself more invested in the themes and ideas than in the actual people at the center of the story.

Overall, I do think many readers will enjoy both the concept and the execution. If you like supernatural horror based is historical fiction, this one is definitely for you. by @witchofthestacks

Thank you NetGalley and Orbit books for the ARC! The Inevitable Undoing of Zahara Douglass is one of the most structurally confident speculative novels I’ve read this year.

What begins as a supernatural mystery slowly evolves into something far larger and more science-fiction driven, blending dystopian tension, emotional depth, and eerie Y2K paranoia into a story that feels both intimate and unsettling.

The multiple narrative forms are exceptionally well done. Zahara’s narration, her father’s tapes, and the gradual unfolding of Annica through diary entries, code logs, and surveillance records all converge seamlessly in the novel’s final act.

Thematically, the novel explores balance through the symbolism of the twins: order and chaos, progress and regression, technology and humanity. Against the backdrop of the turn of the millennium and the lingering fear surrounding Y2K, the story transforms a very real cultural anxiety into something haunting and deeply compelling.

Fast-paced, ambitious, and emotionally resonant, this was easily one of my favorite ARC reads of the year.

Lady Tremaine takes the familiar framework of Cinderella and transforms it into something far more restrained, melancholy, and human.

The writing is consistently strong, the pacing deliberate, and the atmosphere quietly immersive throughout.

Also: these daughters tested my patience at every possible opportunity.

If you enjoy character-driven retellings with elegant prose and emotionally complicated women, this one is worth your time.

Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing for providing me with an ARC of All Our Yesterdays in exchange for an honest review.

All Our Yesterdays is a deeply immersive character study about identity, emotional dependency, first love, and the slow, often painful process of becoming yourself. Whenever people ask where I would go if I could travel back in time, my answer is always “pre-9/11 America.”

Marcy frustrated me for a large portion of this novel, but I believe that frustration was intentional. She is deeply insecure, directionless, and emotionally consumed by her relationship with Cole. While Cole is immature, self-centered, and emotionally avoidant in many ways, the novel refuses to flatten either character into a simple hero or villain. Instead, it presents a painfully believable portrait of two young people creating and sustaining an unhealthy dynamic together.

Wells authentically captures the imbalance that can happen when one person builds their entire identity around another before fully becoming themselves. Marcy’s constant need for reassurance, her inability to envision a future outside of Cole, and the cyclical miscommunication between them became emotionally exhausting at times, but also felt deeply realistic.

This is a thoughtful, emotionally mature novel that may resonate especially strongly with readers who remember the transition from the late 90s into the early 2000s firsthand. by @witchofthestacks

The Weaver’s Loom is, without question, one of my favorite reads of the year. Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and Victory Editing for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is the Jessi St. John’s debut novel and it does not disappoint! From the start, the novel manages to accomplish something surprisingly difficult: it is deeply gothic and unsettling while also feeling strangely cozy and intimate. From the opening chapters, the story pulls you into a richly layered world filled with death magic, mystery, folklore, and carefully woven lore that unfolds naturally. There is a quiet, candlelit quality to the novel that lingers even in its darker moments, creating a reading experience that feels eerie, melancholic, and comforting all at once.

The multiple POVs are distinct and easy to follow, the worldbuilding is immersive without becoming dense, and the central mystery unfolds with genuine confidence and restraint. Rather than relying on shock value or endless twists, the novel trusts its atmosphere, characters, and mythology to carry the story. Every reveal feels earned.

I am already anxiously anticipating the next installment in this series!

Silver is the Night felt like wandering through New Orleans just after midnight — quiet streets, candlelight, secrets lingering in the air.

This is a fast, atmospheric read that understands restraint. The story never overreaches or becomes weighed down by unnecessary complexity. Instead, it stays focused, controlled, and immersive from beginning to end.

One of the strongest aspects of the novel is its approach to vampire mythology. The lore is woven in carefully, giving just enough history and explanation to deepen the story without slowing its pacing. The same balance carries through the characters. They’re developed enough to feel grounded, but the narrative never loses momentum trying to over-explain them.

And while the novel reads quickly, it isn’t without weight. Themes of sexual trauma, emotional aftermath, and dangerous relationship dynamics run quietly beneath the surface, giving the story more depth than its simplicity initially suggests.

Some books demand your full attention.

The Cafe of Infinite Doors is one of those rare stories that balances grief, love, trauma, mystery, and fantasy with remarkable restraint and emotional intelligence. This is not a loud or sensational story. Instead, it unfolds carefully, allowing its characters and themes room to breathe.

Marceline was easily one of my favorite parts of the novel. Watching her personality slowly emerge beneath years of emotional abuse felt deeply authentic and beautifully handled. The novel never sensationalizes its heavier subject matter, which made the emotional moments land even harder.

The dual timelines were seamlessly woven together, and the eventual convergence of the storylines felt satisfying and thoughtfully earned. Brona was another standout character for me — bitter, obsessive, emotionally frozen by vengeance in a way that felt psychologically believable rather than exaggerated.

I also highly recommend the audiobook narration. The performance captured the quieter melancholy and warmth of the novel perfectly and added so much atmosphere to the experience.

This is the kind of book that makes you slow down because you do not want to miss anything.

A deeply atmospheric and emotionally mature read that became an easy five stars for me.
