Last weekend's "Learning through Dancing" workshop symposium at Stockholm University of the Arts was an enriching and inspiring day full of proven practices for facilitating dance, somatics, and movement exploration in school classrooms from preschool through high school, demonstrating the power of embodied and enactive learning for languages, reading and literacy, mathematics, natural sciences, social studies/children's rights, and not in the least how dancing brings school groups together socially, emotionally, and creatively. Much gratitude to presenters Ebba Theorell, Sophia Färlin-Månsson, Ninnie Andersson, Paul Moerman, Maria Edin, Agnès Benoit, Maikki Uotila-Kraatz, Maria Nordlöw, and all the enthusiastic participants. ‘Twas but a drop in the ocean, here's to the ripples and waves! Grateful and stoked that I have been awarded a three-year International Postdoc research grant from The Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) for 2025-2027!With “Learning through Dancing” I aim to develop methods and practices for dance to be applied in school classrooms to enhance embodied and enactive learning processes. I'll look at how integrating dance more deeply into teaching methods and curricula for subjects other than dance can contribute to greater equity, inclusion, and collaboration and among different types of learners as well as more profound and multi-modal integration of learned content... This one’s for all you kids out there who don’t wanna sit still in class! I got you! I’ll be doing my research at Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) and Bennington Center for Advancement of Public Action (CAPA), and through field work with National Dance Institute (NDI) New Mexico, and more. It’s hard to find words. Sometimes loss produces loss. Janet was brave, incisive, astute and on-point (no e, no silly puns necessary) with her words so she’d likely not care for any flubbing about.DAMMIT, JANET, I LOVE YOU. (Kinky cult musical references on the other hand welcome). I’m sad as hell but Ima pull up and celebrate Janet Panetta now because that’s what she deserves. She knew how to celebrate and she celebrated anyone with the courage to take dance seriously. Janet was an incredible teacher because she cared so much about dance and dancers. She taught whole people as whole people doing whole movements - which first confused many of us who’d experienced Ballet as a process of being picked apart and reassembled in an image of some ideal devoid of real personhood. There was no picking apart, even with an incredible eye for detail. Janet saw everything within an entire system of uniquely interconnected artistry. I loved talking to Janet about everything, because she’s so smart and perceptive and sharp and no-nonsense and funny, but I especially appreciated hearing her thoughts on performances. Janet could have been an excellent critic. The intelligence, experience, discernment and curiosity that she offered when she gave her attention is exemplary.She saw us all, so much more than we realized, and when that seeing exceeded the frame of dance class, it transformed into mentorship, friendship, kinship, love. She was chosen family to many of us.Great teachers don’t pass on, they pass themselves on. Janet’s wisdom, determination, humor and style lives on in all of us whose lives and dances she touched so fabulously. Saturday 14 October, 19:00 at Scen46in RABBIT/DUCK for GIBCA extendedperformed in an installation by Melina Bigale ✨@melinabigale“Notes from a Milk Bar: a postpartum litany” is a collection of insights, reflections, anecdotes, revelations, revaluations, jokes, joys, and minor discontents from the profound transformations of spacetime and modybind in early motherhood, written and performed by dancer and choreographer Eleanor Bauer.About “Notes from a Milk Bar: a postpartum litany,” Bauer explains, “My body is by far no longer mine, as I am now a host, pillow, and lifeline for another body. As a dancer I’m familiar with a kind of devotion to others moving in and through me. Now I’m mostly at the service of an other on me. As someone whose joys in life have been marked by movement, my physical world suddenly became very small and sedentary after giving birth. I spent my summer yearning to be outside, learning to be still, moving my breastfeeding chair progressively closer to the window, and producing not much more than milk and fragmentary thoughts. Noticing new relations to time, space, movement, selfhood, creativity, and otherness emerging, I took notes in the 'Notes' app on my phone while breastfeeding, tracking what seemed noteworthy.
