Young Britons are ready to serve. The enthusiasm is cross-party.

Six in ten 18–24-year-olds say they'd sign up for a paid year of service with charities, schools, the emergency services or the armed forces.

53% see it as an opportunity, not an obligation.

A national year of service shouldn't belong to one party. Veterans sit on every bench in Parliament. They could lead the way.

Six in ten Britons say political leadership has become weaker over the past decade.

That is not a verdict on one party or one government. It is a sense that people at the top have stopped taking hard decisions when those decisions cost them something.

The Tower of London has seen nearly a thousand years of history. Last night it hosted the UK launch of Courage Can Save Us, with two veterans now serving in Parliament on opposite benches: Conservative Shadow Foreign Secretary @TomTugendhat and Labour's former Armed Forces Minister @AlCarns. They were joined by Admiral Sir Tony Radakin and former @financialtimes editor @barber_lionel.

Officer cadets from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst came with their Commandant, Major-General Nick Crowley, and @CityYearUK service members came with their UK leadership. They are the readers Rye wrote this book for; young people choosing to serve, in uniform and out.

Sixteen years ago, Nidal Hasan murdered 13 people and wounded dozens more at Fort Hood. He was tried, convicted, and sentenced by a military court.

Choosing a firing squad and livestreaming the execution trades the dignity of the law for the theater of retribution.

Broadcasting a death does not deter terrorists; it hands them the spectacle they seek.

Our military's strength rests on discipline, the rule of law, and the values that distinguish us from those who attack us. We can hold Hasan fully accountable without abandoning those principles.

Last night at @FordsTheatre, @ryebarcott.official moderated "Called to Serve," a conversation with @RepDonBacon, William Braniff of @AmericanUniversity, and @phyllis_wilson_mwm of @womensmemorial about the courage 9/11 demanded and the courage the country needs today.

The evening was presented alongside Ford's production of Come From Away, the story of a small Canadian town that took in thousands of stranded passengers when U.S. airspace closed. Twenty-five years later, that story is a reminder of what neighbors and allies do for one another. As Rep. Bacon put it, the United States should not take its friends and allies for granted.

The panel drew on stories from Courage Can Save US and on their own experiences in uniform and public service, including the courage to take hard votes, to address the hardest issues facing our country, and the courage to watch your loved ones go to war. by @with_honoraction
