my piece and artist statement for @wunder_gym as mentored by @elvis.richardson .. this piece has been selected to go on to be exhibited at the Louis Joel Gallery in November, so you can catch it there if you are also a West person 🧡

Responding to the "Recollection" prompt, 'Hubcap #1' is a love letter to my neighbourhood. Living on the side of a highway, detached hubcaps are one of the most common things I come across on my walks. I began to think of them as the local wildlife, each one a slightly different colour, shape, and size. I have recreated it here out of vintage textile in the same way one might give a child a stuffed version of a local animal. Softening is a major part of my art practice. I want to transform the associations of the hubcap as a process of re-looking at my neighbourhood. I think the first step of working with place is being able to see somewhere as it is, not as we would like it to be. Finding empathy for what may commonly be viewed as trash is a political project. by @withdotson

Some gorgeous photos of Playroom by Sebastian Kainey 🧸 it was a dream come true to be chosen alongside @daethey for the Blindside Emerging Curator Mentorship 2023 and our experienced mentor @zarasully.art guided us at every step of the way. Thank you so much to everyone who came to see it, you could really feel the trans joy in the space.

Paintbrushes for self portraiture, made with various things from around the house and my bleached hair. They leave little bits of hair on the canvas when used which is like a fun DNA bonus. by @withdotson
