Second visit to Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme’s installation at @nottm_contemp and struck by how attentive the work is to time in various forms - diurnal, seasonal, enforced, suspended, interrupted. The music and sound are beautiful and integral, not just supplementary vibes, so these photos tell you very little - go sit with it if you can. by @within_sound

After the End of the World: The Listening Room

Wednesday 26 November, 11am – 4pm (Frances and Natalie in conversation: 3pm), @ampedhudd Coffee, 29 Queensgate, Huddersfield HD1 2RD

A space for listening, reflection and conversation inspired by Natalie Hyacinth's @the_black_astral installation and performance After The End of The World. Throughout Wednesday 26 November, you can listen to a continuous mix of music, sound and text selected by composer and sound artist Natalie Hyacinth, writer and researcher Frances Morgan @within_sound, and participants and friends of the Sonic Cyberfeminisms project, in response to the themes of climate catastrophe, conflict, hope and collective rebuilding addressed in Hyacinth's work.

Link in bio.

SHP’s new album on @bisonrecs is a beauty, great to see it getting so much well-deserved love right now 🌱 by @within_sound

I'm heartbroken to hear about the passing of Neil Kulkarni. I had the privilege of editing Neil's writing for some years, and it really was a genuine privilege. Working with Neil on a piece was a rush, a joy - it never felt like 'work', more like a conversation with a friend, which I guess it was.

In 2005 I commissioned him to write a short column for Plan B mag about the shehnai master Bismillah Khan, whom we both loved. In the piece Neil talks about listening to his dad's records, and how Khan's music 'pulled me back to a fragile sense of belonging
in Indian music'. I was still learning to be a magazine editor at the time, but I knew I wanted to read writing like this, that was about how music was inseparable from life, from memory and place. Without knowing it, Neil helped me find my own place in music journalism. It was people like him who made it feel like a community rather than a closed shop.

A while later, Neil sent me a draft of an essay that became part of his memoir, Eastern Spring, with a typically funny and self-deprecating email asking me to tell him if it was any good. Plan B had closed down, but we’d kept in touch and I was always eager to read his writing. Of course it was good. I found it somewhere in my gmail today and re-read it - it's heartfelt and chaotic, all over the place, full of detail and insight, radiating Neil's infectious energy and deep and complicated love for music. It was both careless and utterly care-full. It made me cry.

He was truly loved and will be missed by so many. My heart goes out to his loved ones, especially his daughters. There's a gofundme to support them at this awful time, I'll link to it in the comments.

Big love to everybody feeling this loss today.

(The image is the header of Neil's Bismillah Khan article - the illustration is a photo of one of my records. I guess we were right on deadline and it was quicker to scan my record than to get one from Neil, but I now wish we'd had a bit more time to do that. It is a cool cover, though.) by @within_sound
