The United States Forest Service and Eagle River Coalition created a community based program a few years back to train volunteer citizen scientists on native trout habitat assessment.

Local community members learned techniques using specialized equipment to collect environmental DNA as well as observe, measure and record stream habitat characteristics that indicated possible support for the reintroduction of native trout species like the greenback cutthroat trout into tributaries within the Eagle River watershed.

Upon completion, citizen scientists ventured into the Colorado backcountry to exercise their new skills collecting eDNA samples and recording habitat observations.

Prior to colonization, the Bronx River was called Aquehung and its headwaters rose from natural springs 24 miles north of New York City. For a short time before urbanization, the Bronx River was described as a sparkling green oasis that once supplied New York City with fresh water.

After centuries of significant industrial pollution and massive environmental degradation, community members rallied together to save New York City’s last remaining freshwater river.

Restoring the Bronx River continues to have its challenges, but the community’s commitment and dedication to save New York City’s last remaining fresh water river serves as an inspirational reminder of the resiliency of people and the natural world.

The restoration of the Bronx River is and always was a community led effort. In the early 1970’s Ruth Anderberg founded a nonprofit organization called The Bronx River Restoration, predecessor to The Bronx River Alliance.

One of Billion Oyster Project’s largest oyster reef restoration installations is at the mouth of the Bronx River in Soundview. Part one of the installation began at the Red Hook shipping terminal in Brooklyn, directly across from Billion Oyster Project’s headquarters on Governors Island.

Crews from Billion Oyster Project filled empty shipping containers with loose oyster shells and gabions filled with oyster shells. The loose oyster shells would form the foundation of the oyster reef and the gabions would be used to form the structure of the reef.

The containers filled with loose oyster shells were transported up the East River to the installation site and emptied onto a barge where crews would offload the loose shells into the water, forming the foundation of the reef. Before being transported to the installation site, the containers filled with oyster gabions were filled with seawater at the Red Hook terminal.

Oyster larvae was introduced to the containers filled with oyster gabions, transforming the shipping containers into huge mobile oyster nurseries.

Once the nurseries were created, the shipping containers were transported by a barge up the East River to the installation site.

Unprecedented widespread insect infestations in states like Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and Montana are negatively impacting iconic western tree species including aspen, Douglas fir, Engelmann spruce and Rocky Mountain lodgepole pine. These infestations are unique compared to historic infestations primarily due to the fact that millions of acres of forest are being killed simultaneously and in a relatively short period of time.

In turn, this has an effect on things like snowpack which exacerbates drought conditions, significantly increases forest fuel loads which impact wildfire conditions and has cascading negative impacts on forest biodiversity.

In response to millions of acres of forests being killed by impacts of the climate emergency, forests throughout the American West are being logged and the trees are being used to create biomass for domestic energy generation and as an export.

Clearcutting forests for biomass energy generation is touted as a greener alternative to fossil fuel but in a brief published by the Natural Resources Defense Council, energy generated by forest biomass actually produces higher carbon emissions than fossil fuels.

The pervasiveness of hydraulic fracturing for natural gas in Western Colorado along the I-70 corridor, the Colorado River and high up on the Roan Plateau is easier to visualize from the unique perspective of flight.

Fracking operations dramatically fragments critical wildlife habitats that were once roadless areas.

It shatters ecosystems and traditional migration routes for a wide variety of animals including elk, moose, mule deer, black bears, mountain lions and the endangered Canada lynx.

The chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing negatively impact water sources and escaping gases degrade air quality for both animal and human communities alike.

Huge thank you to the generous support of Lighthawk and Lighthawk pilot Jim Grady.

Just south of the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge near Tarrytown, New York, Billion Oyster Project submerged cement forms in key locations on the floor of the Hudson River to monitor and study the presence, health and growth of wild oysters that attach themselves to the forms.

Since colonization, centuries of overfishing and pollution wiped out New York’s native oyster reefs. Billion Oyster Project’s mission is to restore oyster reefs and educate the next generation to continue their important work to ensure cleaner waters and protection from storm surge.

Oysters filter water while they eat, removing pollutants like nitrogen which trigger algal blooms that deplete oxygen from the water and create dead zones in marine ecosystems.

One adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day.

Billion Oyster Project installs oyster nurseries in New York Harbor like this one at Brooklyn Bridge Park. The baby oysters in these nurseries are being used to help restore New York Harbor’s oyster reefs.

New York Harbor was once home to 220,000 acres of oyster reefs. Billion Oyster Project’s mission is to restore New York City’s oyster reefs and educate the next generation to continue their important work.

The Colorado Outdoor Recreation and Economy (CORE) Act is a public lands bill introduced to Congress in 2021 by US Senator Michael Bennet, US Senator John Hickenlooper and US Congressman Joe Neguse.

If passed, the bill would protect over 400,000 acres of public lands by expanding and establishing new designated Wilderness and recreation areas in the State of Colorado.

The proposed Wilderness legislation combines four previously introduced public lands bills that represent decades of tireless bipartisan work by community members, business owners, environmental activists, outdoor recreation associations, veterans and energy and water groups.

In states like Colorado, the climate emergency is amplifying natural processes within forest ecosystems. One of those processes is native mountain pine beetle infestations that are impacting Rocky Mountain lodgepole pine forests. In contrast to historic infestations, millions of acres of lodgepole pines have been killed all at once over a short span of time, dramatically increasing forest fuel loads.

Paired with unprecedented drought conditions throughout the American West, this increases the chance for catastrophic wildfires which burn much hotter than historic wildfires, sterilizing up to 12 inches of soil. This is important because it takes roughly 1,000 years to create 1 inch of soil in forest ecosystems.

People are split on what to do with lodgepole forests that have been impacted by mountain pine beetle infestation. Some believe leaving the dead trees where they are gives the forests a chance to eventually return to homeostasis. Others feel that removing the trees speeds up the natural process by somewhat mimicking what happens during historic wildfires.

Many private landowners are opting to capitalize on the infestation by selling contracts to have lodgepole pines removed for sale and export.

There are pros and cons to both arguments but one thing is for sure, the unprecedented loss of North America’s lodgepole pine forests is negatively impacting snowpack, making current drought conditions throughout the region worse.

Every year The Bronx River Alliance hosts one of their most popular fundraising events: The Amazing Bronx River Flotilla. It’s an incredible and unique opportunity to experience a part of New York City that most people don’t even know exists.

The event is a 5 mile paddle down the Bronx River to raise funds for the organization’s canoe program and for the river.

As a community-centric environmental organization with a mission to help conserve, preserve and restore New York City’s last remaining freshwater river, The Bronx River Alliance relies on cornerstone events like the annual flotilla not only for necessary fundraising but for vitality important community engagement.

When the pandemic hit and all in person events were shutdown, The Bronx River Alliance had to cancel their annual flotilla. Like so many environmental organizations committed to their mission, they got creative and decided to create a virtual flotilla event.

I’d already partnered with this amazing organization on several projects when they approached me to help them create The Virtual Bronx River Flotilla. That summer I met up with team members and we paddled down the Bronx River. It was one of the most incredible experiences I’ve ever had.

This is the trailer I created to promote the 3 part virtual paddle series. If you’re in the NYC area, you need to put The Amazing Bronx River Flotilla on your bucket list. 10/10 highly recommend.
