Hard to believe we’ve been doing 2 and a half years of orchestra nights at Kennedy Center through the UVA Alum Club. Couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather, and on opening night of the Watergate rooftop no less. May be a long time till we get to do another bc of the structural repairs starting soon. STORY: NOT a beautiful photo. I was running a small private security firm in Portland. It’s been sad to watch what ought to be one of America’s most beautiful cities become one of it’s top embarrassments. Some things I quickly learned: 1. Independent family businesses over 50 years old are now forced to leave the city. 2. They can’t afford protection bc the crime chased away the customers. 3. The police are prevented from enforcing most laws. 4. The challenge isn’t selling security—it’s finding and retaining people capable of doing the work. It’s sad that I can be safer and more economically productive in some “3rd world countries” than in my own. It is only going to deteriorate until a small group of positioned people accept the social risk of cleaning bureaucratic house (and somehow replace/arrest the compromised DA). 2022: this night was the highlight of the whole year. Incredibly happy for my good friend Rob getting married, and incredibly spoiled by one of the nicest events I’ve ever attended. Rob is a truly brilliant and genuine person who attracts good and interesting people into his life and I am immensely grateful to know him.
