I read 20 books in the month of September which is phenomenal for me. The Disappearers was my top favorite, but I had a lot of amazing reads.

What was your favorite book you read last month?

I read 20 books in the month of September. I rank them from least enjoyed to most enjoyed and share some thoughts on each book. Overall it was a fantastic reading month!

We spent a day in Astoria so of course I had to check out the local bookstores.

Godfather’s Books has a mix of old and new and is very eclectic and interesting.

Look Around Books has a fantastic selection of new releases that I usually don’t see in other stores.

I love visiting local bookstores when I’m in a new city. It’s one of the best parts of traveling.

Why do I have so many fantasy books when I don’t actually read a lot of them? I always think I’ll read them but then I seem to pick other genres instead.

Do you have a genre that you always think you’ll read, but find you don’t often pick up?

I walked into @sherwoodbookstore and came out with these 3 new releases. Also the power went out as soon as I walked in so that was interesting.

I needed a shelf trophy of the newest @jodipicoult book because it was absolutely phenomenal. I’ll be out of town when she’s visiting my area so maybe one day I’ll be able to get it signed 😉

The other two books sound right up my alley and I can’t wait to tandem read them with the audios.

Did you grab any new releases today?

Hollow Bones from Jodi Picoult is out today and I think it’s a must read!

On paper, this book shouldn’t have worked for me. There are a lot of topics in here that I don’t typically enjoy reading about, but I trust Jodi Picoult, so I continued on my reading journey. I’m so glad I did! This truly was phenomenal. There are so many layers and pieces to this story. It really is a mosaic and you get the little pieces throughout, and once it’s all finished, you finally see the bigger picture.

This book is dark and has a lot of difficult subject matter. I knew 9/11 would be a main topic, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. It felt well researched and I enjoyed the characters and getting their stories.

This book does discuss the plot from My Sister’s Keeper as there is some crossover with characters. While you don’t need to read that in order to enjoy this book, I do think it enhances the experience. If you eventually want to read My Sister’s Keeper, I’d do that before this one so the plot isn’t spoiled.

Thank you Ballantine for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

This is the first book I’ve ever read twice. I can’t believe I’ll be 40 next month and have never reread a book until now.

I originally read it in high school over 20 years ago, and I loved it even more reading it as an adult. There is so much genius within the stream of consciousness narrative. The multiple POVs are excellent and everything comes together so well. Brilliant.

This is a darkly comedic story of a family going through many troubles to honor the dying wishes of the wife and mother. I remembered loving the stylistic and narrative choices when I originally read this, and it helps explain my tastes as a reader.

What’s a book you want to read again?

I listened to the audiobook of Dreamland by Olivie Blake and immediately knew I needed a gorgeous copy of my own. This is from @owlcrate and it’s absolutely amazing! This book totally worked for me and it was fun buddy reading with @bookishlysonia and @whsthtgirl even though we all didn’t agree with our thoughts.

My review from Goodreads:
This was fantastic. I loved the structure and formatting of this and it totally worked for me. I listened to the audio and the audio production was amazing. It really elevated the story. The narrators were excellent and everything sounded very crisp and clean. I could see myself listening again while reading along because I do think seeing the formatting with my eyes could be beneficial. I never once felt confused, but did have to pay attention a little more than usual.

I feel like this is a great example of a gothic story in a modern setting. Anya is the perfect main character. Is she unlikable or is she just ambitious? There are so many quotable moments in this book and I really appreciated the exploration of the dark side of Hollywood. The paranormal elements were incredibly well done and never felt too over the top or fantastical in comparison to the rest of the story. I can’t say enough positive things about this book.

Thank you Macmillan Audio for the advanced listening copy. All opinions are my own.

I love supporting my local indie bookstore. I have a rule that when I visit an indie shop, I leave with a book (or two). I think it’s a fantastic rule, don’t you?

I was on the way home from dinner and dropped in and decided to pick up some new releases that I’m so excited to read!

My September box from @aardvarkbookclub arrived and I’m so excited for all of these!

Aardvark always has the best monthly picks. I’ll be starting Fruit Fly ASAP because I’ve seen so many positive things about it.

Do you do any monthly subscriptions for books?

I love seeing my NYRB Classics collection grow. Right now they are in a somewhat rainbow order, but I might alphabetize them by author so it’s easier to see what I have on my shelves.

Do you organize by aesthetics or by function?

It’s raining here in Oregon, so I’ll be spending the next several months in my home library. I love having the moody lights on and getting nice and cozy on my couch. Who needs to leave the house when you have a space like this?

Do you like rainy, gloomy weather? It’s my favorite.
