Just a few months ago, birthdays felt uncertain.

On April 15 my life changed.

What followed was a storm of fear, grief, questions, and continued physical illness. I wondered what my future would look like. I mourned the life I thought I had lost while trying to understand the one still in front of me.

But healing began one day at a time. With the support of compassionate healthcare providers, modern science, and the simple decision to keep moving forward, fear slowly gave way to hope. Every pill became a promise to myself. Every follow-up appointment became proof that progress was possible. Every new morning reminded me that I was still here.

Today, a little over three and a half months later, I celebrate not only another year of life but an incredible milestone: I am undetectable. That word represents resilience, treatment, and the extraordinary advances in medicine that allow people living with HIV to live long, healthy, and fulfilling lives.

If my journey has taught me anything, it is this: Know your status. Get tested. An HIV test can change your life—not because of the diagnosis itself, but because it opens the door to treatment, health, and hope. HIV is no longer the story it was decades ago. With early diagnosis and consistent treatment, people can thrive.

Today, I choose gratitude over fear. I am grateful to be alive. I am grateful for the scientists, researchers, healthcare workers, and advocates whose work made this possible. Most of all, I am grateful for another birthday—a reminder that strength is not about never falling. It is about rising, even when you never imagined you could.

Here’s to life, to resilience, and to many more birthdays ahead.
