Dr. Richard E. Holmes, Mississippi State University’s first African American student, died on Friday, October 16, according to the university. He was 82 years old.

“My wife and my four children, all now MSU students, join me in mourning the death of a man who profoundly and positively influenced our university. Dr. Richard Holmes was a man of courage, vision, and patience who enrolled at this university on July 19, 1965,” MSU President Mark E. Keenum said. “Later, he earned the honor of being our first Black National Alumnus of the Year. We were also fortunate to have him serve as a physician at our Longest Student Health Center. Dr. Holmes cast a long, productive, and impactful shadow over this institution, a shadow that also leaned forward. I will miss his company and his counsel.”

Holmes, a Starkville native, graduated with two MSU degrees, a liberal arts degree in 1969 and a master’s degree in microbiology in 1973.

Southern Promiseland Farm has welcomed two new calves this fall, with 46 more expected through February, as the farm uses embryo transfer technology to grow its herd.

The farm has operated for about 30 years and started its corn maze 22 years ago. Owner Stacey Necaise said the farm has always kept cattle or other livestock.

After acquiring Highland cows, the farm began using embryo transfer. Staff use the farm’s miniature Highland cows as donors, breeding them with selected bulls to create embryos. The embryos are then placed in the farm’s Black Angus cows, which carry, deliver and raise the calves.

Beary Scary! A black bear walked into an Alaska hospital early Monday and treated itself to Halloween candy.

The roamed the hallway around 2 a.m., stopping only when it found a bucket of donated Halloween candy.

“This is like being in a tunnel with a bear,” said Sherri Warnke, who had been at the hospital helping her mother settle in after being transferred.

Warnke, who does not work at the hospital, said she was walking toward the exit through the emergency department when the bear stepped out of a side hallway ahead of her. She said the bear was about 30 feet away.

“And if I was like 15 seconds faster, we would have ran into each other,” she said.

A Mobile, Alabama man was sentenced this week after pleading guilty to the felony crimes of carjacking and kidnapping. Judge Keith Miller sentenced 37-year-old Demetrius Young to 30 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

During the early morning hours of April 21, 2024, a woman was traveling westbound on Highway 98 in George County with an adult passenger and three children — then ages 11, 13, and 10 months old — when she saw Young’s vehicle broken down in the roadway.

When the woman stopped to help, Young asked her for a ride. The woman explained she couldn’t give him a ride because children were in her vehicle and there was no room. Young then pushed her aside and sped away in her vehicle with the adult passenger and three children still inside.

The survey found major changes along the coast, including shoreline movement, marsh-edge erosion, and barrier islands eroding by at least 15 feet each year.
