No two El Niño events are exactly alike. Each event is unique in terms of its evolution, spatial pattern and impacts.

However, it is typically associated with increased rainfall in parts of southern South America, the southern United States, parts of the Horn of Africa and central Asia, and drier conditions over Central America, northern South America, the Caribbean, Australia, Indonesia, and parts of southern Asia.

National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, WMO Regional Climate Centres, and Regional Climate Outlook Forums issue regularly updated information to inform national and regional decision-making.

📍 @noaa is forecasting a below-normal hurricane season for the Atlantic basin this year.

📍 The Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum predicts a high likelihood of below-normal rainfall across much of the northern Greater Horn of Africa during the critical June–September rainy season.

📍 South Asia is expected to receive below average monsoon rainfall, according to the South Asian Climate Outlook Forum.

For two weeks, Typhoon Bavi—a large and powerful typhoon—tracked across Western Pacific, bringing destructive winds, torrential rain, and widespread damage and loss of life.

At its peak intensity, Typhoon Bavi brought winds of 290 kilometers (180 miles) per hour, along with torrential rain and dangerous storm surge to the Pacific islands, according to @nasa.

Satellite technology allows us to visualize the scale and intensity of tropical cyclones and is a powerful tool for forecasting and early warning. Through WMO, National Meteorological and Hydrological Services exchange observations across borders, improve forecasts, and issue timely warnings that help save lives and protect property.

It's not just the daytime highs that matter for our health. High overnight temperatures make hot days more hazardous and increase overall heat stress.

When temperatures soar, the term “heatwave” is often used. But heatwaves and hot days are NOT the same. What's the difference?

☀️ Hot Days (not a heatwave): when high daytime heat is offset by significant overnight cooling, and systems are able to reset.

🌡️ 🌙 Heatwave: Daytime heat is greater than overnight cooling. Heat accumulates over consecutive days and nights. Everyone is at risk, including healthy individuals who are active or unprepared. Highly vulnerable people such as the elderly and people with preexisting health conditions need targeted support.

🥵 Extreme heatwave: No overnight cooling. Heat accumulates at an alarming rate, overwhelming all normal heat storage capacities.

Watch how the soil moisture in Madagascar changed between March to June 2026 in these images from @copernicus_eu Emergency Management Service Data.

According to the latest Copernicus Global Drought Observatory (GDO) report, the drought is the result of low rainfall and above-average temperatures. The impacts of droughts may vary but could have serious effects to communities, agriculture and food security, hydropower generation, infrastructure, the economy, and ecosystems.

Majority of Southern Africa received above-normal rainfall in 2025, although many of the East Africa islands received below-normal rainfall, according to the WMO #StateofClimate in Africa report. Extreme weather and climate events including drought, have impacted 8.5 million people in the region.

Name the cloud ☁️

This striking image by Katica Mustapić, one of the winners of the WMO 2026 Calendar Photo Competition, captures what appears to be a spectacular stacked lenticular cloud glowing at sunset over the island of Pag, Croatia.

Lenticular clouds are smooth, lens- or almond-shaped clouds, usually with well-defined outlines. They most commonly form over mountains or elevated terrain.

The cloud shown here appears to be an Altocumulus lenticularis—a lens-shaped form of Altocumulus that can appear stacked in layers, creating its distinctive "UFO-like" appearance.

Large plumes of smoke from wildfires currently burning across Canada are affecting air quality across large parts of the country and the northeastern United States, including New York, which will host the World Cup final this Sunday.

This footage from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) shows the cumulative estimated carbon emissions from 13 to 20 July 2026, along with forecasts of organic matter aerosol optical depth.

Wildfire emissions contain toxic pollutants that are harmful to human health. New York State, which will host thousands of football spectators this weekend, was already under an Air Quality Advisory on Thursday, 16 July, because of unhealthy air pollution levels.

Atmospheric science provides the tools to anticipate and track extreme air pollution events, including wildfire smoke and other transboundary hazards that affect millions of people across continents. Monitoring and forecasting enable governments and National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) to issue #EarlyWarnings, helping to protect people and their livelihoods from exposure to hazardous levels of air pollution. by @wmo_omm
