WMU was honored to welcome Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado. The official visit reflects the long-standing partnership between Japan and WMU and a shared commitment to advancing maritime education, capacity development, and sustainable ocean governance.

A highlight of the visit was an address by Her Imperial Highness to WMU faculty, staff and students. The visit also included presentations on WMU’s academic and research activities as well as a visit to the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute, generously supported by the Nippon Foundation of Japan.

We extend our sincere thanks to Her Imperial Highness, the Embassy of Japan in Sweden, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation and all participants who contributed to this memorable occasion.

In celebration of wildlife conservation day, WMU staff, students and executive board members enjoyed a special screening of The Ocean with Sir David Attenborough. 🌊💙 This extraordinary film explores the beauty of our ocean and the urgent need for it’s conservation, for the benefit of all life on earth. 🌎

Many thanks to the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute for arranging the screening and the Staff Association Committee for the popcorn and drinks! 🍿🥤👍 by @wmuhq

🌍 A Turning Point for the Arctic Ocean ❄️💙

This week at the UN’s International Maritime Organization @imo_hq in London, our founder @penhadow, presented a landmark report on the future of the Central Arctic Ocean—the world’s only polar ocean and one of its last great wildernesses.

As the sea-ice barrier recedes, new shipping routes and industrial pressures are emerging. Our report, created with the World Maritime University @wmuhq, shows that without protection, the Arctic’s fragile biodiversity and Indigenous communities will face unprecedented risks.

But there’s hope.
Six IMO delegations have already approached us, signalling early interest in exploring a powerful solution: designating the region around the North Pole as a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) to restrict damaging vessel activity.

🔹 The area is the size of India
🔹 Ecological vulnerabilities are extreme
🔹 Economic potential has been widely overstated
🔹 Indigenous cultures and food security are under threat

This is our moment to act.

Together, we can keep the Arctic Ocean a sanctuary for wildlife, scientific discovery, and peaceful international cooperation.
