We keep talking about the skills people will need for the future of work.

There’s just one problem: the future is already here.

Jobs are changing. AI is reshaping how work gets done. And nearly 40 per cent of the skills required on the job are expected to change by 2030.

Yet when we asked people how their organizations are approaching reskilling, 41 per cent said their employer isn’t addressing it yet. Only 24 per cent reported having proactive training programs.

Giving employees access to a course library isn’t the same as preparing them for what comes next — especially when organizations often know far more than employees do about how roles are about to change.

So who owns reskilling when the job itself is being redesigned?

We dig into the growing gap between knowing work is changing and actually preparing people for it. by @woiglobal

What moves a career forward?

The answer is getting harder to separate from who gets access.

Women of Influence research found that fewer than half of women surveyed had ever had a sponsor, despite 73 per cent of sponsored women saying it accelerated their careers. Other research has continued to show the importance of visibility, manager advocacy, stretch opportunities, and access to senior leaders.
And now the way we work is changing the equation again.

Hybrid work can make it easier to stay in the workforce while making some of the informal moments that build relationships harder to access. AI is changing which skills are valuable. Flatter organizations can mean fewer obvious steps upward. And strong performance alone doesn’t necessarily put someone into the conversations where the next opportunity is decided.

Career advancement has never been only about working harder.

It is also about who sees your potential, who advocates for it, and whether the workplace gives you a real opportunity to demonstrate what you can do next.
