People’s Choice went to the Firebay at this years 11th WBC Birthday Bash! Owned by Nathan Giusto @nathangiusto The Firebay, a 1970 cali import , not sure when it came to the UK to be honest… The first owner was Pete Townley, he slammed it and it was in his ownership the fire happened, there is a video on YouTube if you search Firebay VW. He put it back on the road after the fire and then sold it to Phil Birks from Lazy Leisure Campers, he then gutted it, cut out loads of metal and added the tubs etc , hydraulic suspension, new everything underneath, the engine that’s currently installed which is a 1641 , and he made the one off interior, which includes, electric bed, tv with Freeveiw, fridge, sink with water pump, hob etc… It has a custom fuel tank and lpg gas tank for heating and the hob, everything has been done you can think of! Since my ownership the last 4 years, I have added the wheels on it now, wilwood discs at the front, flooring and carpets, steering wheel from ACA, Alpine Bluetooth pull out stereo and kept it serviced and in as good condition as I can! Judges Choice went to Dougal at this years 11th WBC Birthday Bash! Owned by Gertjan & Claire Jansen We’ve had our Bus, Dougal, for over 25 years. We bought him in the Netherlands and brought him over to the UK, naming him after Dougal in the Magic Rounabout (Claire had a Fiat126 called Florence at the time) and first of all did up the inside on a shoestring with old kitchen cupboards from our flat and the cheapest fabric we could find for curtains. Dougal was used to camp in right from the start, and we gradually got things the way we wanted inside - Gertjan built the cupboards, table, shelves etc. and Claire did the soft furnishings. There was a fair amount of welding and respraying too, and all through the years we’ve camped in Dougal, first as a couple and then with our daughter from when she was a few weeks old - she’s now 19. Our dog Nala is also a happy camper in Dougal. We’ve done countless weekends away, overnight britstops, summer holidays in Europe, half term weeks with family, and quite a lot of sneaky car park camps at weddings in fancy hotels, and also used Dougal as the transport to our own wedding reception. Last year we took sabbaticals from work, while our daughter was travelling abroad on her gap year, and travelled in Dougal across Europe for 7 months from Spain through Portugal, Morocco, France, Sardinia, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Poland and many more, 18 countries in total. It was an incredible trip - the first of many we hope as we get closer to retirement. Dougal is truly one of the family, and we were delighted and honoured to win this award, thank you WBC! Crew Kidz Choice went to Blossom at this years 11th WBC Birthday Bash! Owned by Jane & Steve Sutton. Born in Australia in 1974 and was shipped over to England by a doctor in Devon in 2010. They bought her in April 2016 when she had been recently renovated and went travelling around Europe with our daughter poppy for a year. Since then she is used in all the holidays (as we work term time only) and most weekends, even in the winter. The original engine was replaced with a 2 litre type 4 engine in Dec 2020 and its a Sopru Conversion which was very popular in the 1960s & 70s.
