“Around one table you might find someone who has spent a decade in refugee response sitting next to someone starting their first research project, each bringing a different set of stories from a completely different part of the world.”

In our latest Scholarship Spotlight feature, Diana Manucharian shares her experience of how inspiring a chance conversation at dinner here at Wolfson can be.

She also reflects on how being the first recipient of the first Richard Chancellor’s Journey PhD Studentship enabled her to continue her journey from journalism in Ukraine to a PhD at Cambridge, focussing on the impact of war.

We were delighted to see so many people at our latest Meet the Artists event to celebrate the brilliant ‘Images and Other Conversations’ exhibition by @suleman_khilji and @charlotte_winifred_guerard ✨

In this exhibition, Suleman and Charlotte came together to showcase their work for the first time as a pair, as a way of extending their dialogue. Presenting a symbiosis of their two practices, each with a story of its own, their artwork was interwoven into a combined visual display.

This collaboration presented a conversation centred around the idea of painting. They consider the surfaces onto which they created, and the materials used in the process, witnessing some overlap in their ways of working with differing results.

The exhibition has now come to a close but work is already under way preparing for our next! by @wolfsoncollegecam

We are delighted to celebrate a career accolade for Wolfson Fellow Dr Peter Neyroud.

Peter, who is Associate Professor in Evidence-based Policing at the Institute of Criminology in Cambridge was awarded the Lawrence W. Sherman Prize in recognition of his service to policing, from serving as a Chief Constable through to supporting hundreds of mid-career officers through their Master’s studies.

He was nominated for the award by Professor Lawrence Sherman, who said, "Peter has set an example to thousands of police constables who start work just as he did, to raise their gaze and use better evidence for a better world."

Peter received the reward recently at the National Conference of the Society of Evidence-based Policing.

"Being awarded the Lawrence W. Sherman prize is a considerable honour. Professor Lawrence Sherman has been both the major transformational scholar in our field of policing as well as a friend, guide, supervisor and co-author.

“The prize is also an international one, voted on by members of the UK, Australia/New Zealand, US, Canadian and Dutch Societies of Evidence-based policing, so having my scholarship and professional contribution recognised by policing and academic peers from across the world is very special and it is an award I will treasure." by @wolfsoncollegecam

October marks an international month of recognition for the important contributions of Black scholars, artists, and activists, as well as key events in the history of the African continent and its diaspora.

Wolfson's President, Professor Dame Ijeoma Uchegbu, said, "October is Black History Month, a month when we have our annual celebration of Black excellence. This is a reminder to our population of the past and present societal contribution of Black individuals. By reaching into the past for relevant examples of Black achievement and success, we can fuel the motivation of future leaders and proponents of Black excellence.

This annual moment in the calendar is also focused on trying to address the historic systematic marginalisation of Black members of our society with these examples of Black people doing good in intellectual, activism and other spaces. I would argue that showcasing Black excellence is especially important when viewed against the backdrop of a very difficult summer for Black equity.

My dream however is for a future when we do not have to signpost individual examples of Black excellence, as the notion of Black achievement will be accepted unquestioningly, as part of a normal distribution of human endeavour. In essence making Black History Month truly redundant is my fervent wish.

I will end by saying that an unequal society is plagued by societal ills that afflict us all and so we should all strive to value people no matter their ethnic background. Let us look forward to consigning Black History Month to history."

The College is marking Black History Month with several events that are free for all to attend - to find out more, visit the link in our bio 🔗

Give it up for Cynthia @IAmCynthiaLam who recently graduated with a PhD in Clinical Neuroscience from @WolfsonCollegeCam 🥳🧑‍🎓

We caught up with Cynthia to find out more about her Cambridge journey 🎓

"I came to Cambridge because I was fascinated by the brain and wanted to understand how we make sense of sound. That curiosity became my PhD, where I studied how people with cochlear implants experience music and speech. But when I look back on my time here, it’s the people I’ll remember most."

Cynthia reflects on what made her time at Cambridge so special 🪞

"Some of my favourite memories were meeting people from every corner of the world over formal halls, celebrating at May Balls until sunrise, and being surrounded by an incredibly supportive lab that made even the toughest days enjoyable."

Cynthia also shares some useful advice for those starting at Cambridge next week 🎉

"Say yes to things outside your department. Go to the random talks. Row if you’ve never rowed. Attend formal halls. And make friends from subjects completely different from your own."

So what’s next, Cynthia? 👀

"I’m currently working in healthcare strategy, helping improve access to medicines so scientific discoveries can reach patients who need them."

Many congratulations Cynthia, we wish you all the best 👏

PhD student Yoann Launay recently travelled 6,500 km across Europe by train, visiting theoretical physics institutions, conferences and meetings, to raise awareness of climate action in academia 🚄

Yoann studies early-universe cosmology, but while his research looks at some of the largest scales imaginable, he is increasingly concerned with something much closer to home: the environmental impact of academic research 🌍

He says, "I was mostly silent and doing my own thing, but then I thought, if everybody is silent, then nothing is going to change... You don't have to be perfect. That's not the point. The point is that everyone needs to do their bit and be aware, because this is how you make a change."
