D.C. tenant rights came from struggle!

Tenant organizations from across D.C. joined the Party for Socialism and Liberation and the Woodner Tenants Union on Sunday for a group study of the D.C. Tenant Bill of Rights and the history of working-class struggle that created these protections. At a time when landlords are funneling millions into supporting politicians and initiatives designed to weaken these protections, it's all the more important for us to assert that housing is a human right that we will fight to secure and defend! by @woodnerunion

DC Landlords Demand Congress Overturn Home Rule to Attack Renters

Washington, D.C.’s significant tenant protections were won by the same mass struggle that defeated Jim Crow segregation in D.C. and secured Home Rule and other progressive victories. It’s no coincidence the ruling class is attacking both of them now.

A group of D.C. landlords calling themselves the “DC Housing Recovery Coalition” represented by CEO and landlord Dean Hunter has published a letter to far-right Rep. James Comer calling on the federal government to overturn local tenant protections. Its targets include rent stabilization, “Just Cause” eviction laws, the Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act (TOPA), Emergency Rental Assistance, DCHA Housing Vouchers, expedite the eviction process, and more. Many of these have already been chipped away at by pro-landlord Mayor Muriel Bowser’s administration in recent years.

For a landlord, a house or apartment is just another way to make money - and something to deny to those who can’t pay. But for working people, a house isn’t a business asset - it’s the place they live!

It’s no coincidence that D.C.’s tenant rights are protected by Home Rule - or that both are now the enemies of the ruling class that supports both Trump and Bowser. Working-class Black Washingtonians fought for and won both of them through a struggle for Black freedom that tore down Jim Crow apartheid in D.C. and across the country. The only way to secure all our rights is to pick up the fight for D.C. Statehood and for socialism - a system where the government answers to the needs of the people - not the demands of private profit! by @woodnerunion

This Sunday, SAI joined our comrades at the Woodner Tenant's Union office for our final session of Summer Against Imperialism!

Readings included Chapter 4 of Abolish Rent: How Tenants Can End the Housing Crisis by Tracy Rosenthal and Leonardo Vilchis, as well as "The Necessity of Organization: The League of Revolutionary Struggle and the Watsonville Canning Strike" by Peter Shapiro.

The bare-minimum tenant's rights and worker protections we take for granted today were won decades ago by revolutionary organizers. Those rights are under attack. Just this month, Dean Hunter and Mayor Bowser moved to encroach on tenants' hard-won rights. Our study informed our discussion about how the working class—by organizing as tenants, laborers, and students—can build power to fight back and win a better, more democratic world.

In addition to the @woodnerunion, this summer we were joined by dozens of comrades, including some from the @gucoalitionforworkers and the @gwlaborcouncil. We look forward to continuing to learn together and strengthening our movement. If you are interestedly in getting involved, come to SAI's next group study event! by @woodnerunion

🗣️GUARD OUT OF DC!

🗓️SAT. AUGUST 15
🕓12:00 PM
📍14th & U Street NW

One year on, and Donald Trump’s occupation of Washington D.C. has been a total disaster. Billions in taxpayer money have been used to create a state of terror and violence on working-class and immigrant communities. Out-of-state governors, Republican and Democrat, have assisted in Trump’s deployment with their national guard, attacking the home rule of the District.

The people of Washington, D.C. have resisted these attacks: by defending our neighbors from federal agents, speaking out against racist policies of the White House and Congress, and taking to the streets to demand no business as usual. On the year anniversary, let’s demand a D.C. that is for its residents — not a stage for Trump and the right-wing! taken in Washington, DC by @woodnerunion

Join SAI and the Woodner Tenant Union for SAI's last week of Summer Against Imperialism!

SAI is very grateful for the partnership we have been able to build with the WTU. We recognize the importance of building relationships with organizations and communities off campus, as students attending a university that has facilitated the gentrification of much of DC. Studying in solidarity with each other is crucial to building a stronger movement.

DC tenants are under attack. Dean Hunter and his “D.C. Housing Recovery Coalition” are lobbying the federal government to strip away tenant rights and take over DC housing. Mayor Bowser is pushing a new housing “Investment Protection Act” to further fast-track evictions. The housing crisis will escalate as long as capitalism persists — the fight for socialism is the fight to abolish the system that prioritizes profit over human rights.

Texts for discussion will include:

by Tracy Rosenthal and Leonardo Vilchis

TENANT POWER GETS THE GOODS!

After decades of undemocratic developer rule in DC, we are now set to have a Mayor who has stood with tenants on rent strike and a Ward 1 Councilwoman who has helped organize a rent strike herself. We are so proud to have been a part of this movement, and are so proud of every tenant and neighbor who has contributed to this fight over the last 10 months. A particular shout-out goes to the Woodner Tenants' Union and the Tivoli Gardens Tenants Association, which gave historic electoral endorsements for Aparna Raj. The struggle against the landlords continues, but we've taken a great step forward.
