Welcome to Woof Works Training — your trusted dog trainers in Cape Neddick, Maine.

What to Expect at Your First Session 👇🏼

We’re excited to work with you and your dog! Your first session is all about understanding, communication, and building the foundation for success. Dogs tend to be more receptive to training in a new space, and we have all of the necessary equipment for your dog to learn best. Most sessions will take place at our facility, but we’ll eventually test your dog’s training and/or behavior changes in the real world or at home.

🧳 What to Bring:
• An open mind, positive attitude, and willingness to learn
• Your goals for training eg. Improved obedience, curbing unwanted behavior, etc.
• Any training equipment that you currently use
• Your dog’s favorite training treats
• Training treat pouch
We also have recommended equipment and treats available for purchase on site.

🐾 Getting to Know You & Your Dog:
• Why you decided to seek training
• Any past experience with formal training
• What daily life looks like at home
• Challenges you’ve been facing
*This is a judgment-free space. Most dogs and their owners face challenges — we’re here to help, not criticize.

👀 Observation & Assessment:
• Your dog’s behavior and temperament
• How you and your dog interact
• Your dog’s response to the trainer
• What motivates your dog - food rewards, toys, pets, praise, etc.
• Environmental triggers and communication patterns
This will help us develop a customized training plan for your dog.

Communication with a dog is like learning a new language for humans
• It takes time to master. We’ll teach you clear and consistent communication
• Timing is critical in dog training. We’ll teach you that too!
• Clarity will promote better behavior, faster learning, and the joy of training!

Can we get a little appreciation for the hardest-working employee at Woof Works? 🐶👏

Meet Annie—Woof Works’ resident dog, assistant trainer, socialization expert, playmate, confidence builder, and all-around MVP.

Annie regularly steps into training sessions to help other dogs work through real-life challenges. She helps with reactivity. She supports socialization. She demonstrates appropriate play. She gives dogs opportunities to practice their skills around another dog in a controlled setting.

And somehow, she makes it all look like she’s just having a really great day at work 😂🐾

Having a reliable, well-trained dog like Annie available during sessions is an incredible resource for our trainers and our clients. She knows when it’s time to work, when it’s time to play, and when another dog needs a little help figuring things out. We genuinely don’t know what we’d do without her.

So this one’s for Annie—the goodest girl, unofficial Woof Works employee, and arguably the one who deserves the biggest paycheck around here ❤️

🐾 Place training is so much more than teaching your dog to stay on a bed!

“Place” is a valuable management tool that can be used for all kinds of behaviors and real-life situations. Being able to send your dog to a specific spot from anywhere in the house gives you a way to create structure, encourage calm behavior, and manage everyday challenges.

There’s no one reason to start dog training 🐾

Some owners want better leash manners. Some are navigating reactivity or unwanted behaviors. Others want stronger communication, reliable recall, or simply a better relationship with their dog.

And sometimes, you just want everyday life together to feel a little easier 🐶

Whatever brings you to training, you don’t have to wait until there’s a “big problem” to get started. Every dog is different, every owner has different goals, and every training journey starts somewhere.

Whoever said old dogs can’t learn new tricks? 🐾

Senior dogs are often overlooked. Many owners assume that longer naps and a couple of short potty-break walks are enough. But the truth is, dogs of all ages still need enrichment.

They may not be able to handle long training sessions, endless games of fetch, hikes, swims, or long walks like they once did—but that doesn’t mean they stop enjoying life or learning 🐶

Meet Agnes, Mike’s 13-year-old Pit Bull ❤️

As Agnes has gotten older, she’s lost much of her hearing and eyesight and now shows multiple signs of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction. The peaceful evening walks and training sessions she once loved have become uncomfortable and challenging.

So instead of forcing activities that no longer suit her, Mike adapted to her needs.

👃 With her hearing and vision declining, Agnes relies heavily on her incredible nose.

🌱 Instead of walking along busy roads, she enjoys slow strolls through soft grass at her own pace.

🧠 And one of her favorite activities? Search games! Mike hides food in toys and small cones, giving Agnes a chance to use her nose, engage her brain, and sneak in a few extra steps of exercise.

For a younger dog, these games might seem simple. For a senior dog, they can be incredibly enriching and help improve their quality of life.

Growing older doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. It simply means we need to adapt to our dogs’ changing needs.

Adapting to your senior dog’s lifestyle is one of the greatest gifts you can give them ❤️

Everyone deserves to enjoy a relaxing day at the beach—including those without dogs! 🏖️🐶

Don’t be the owner with the out-of-control dog running up to people, other dogs, or kids playing in the sand. Good beach etiquette starts with responsible dog ownership and reliable training.

Here are a few beach etiquette tips from Annie, the star of Woof Works Training! 🐾

☀️ Arrive on leash. Only let your dog off leash when it’s safe and permitted to do so.

☀️ Reliable recall is a MUST. If your dog is off leash, they should come back immediately—even when running, sniffing, playing, or distracted by other dogs and people.

☀️ Use the beach for real-life training. New sights, sounds, kids playing, beach games, water, and other dogs create great opportunities to practice around distractions.

☀️ Respect everyone’s space. If someone wants to help you train, that’s awesome—but most people are there to relax and enjoy their day.
☀️ Leash up when passing another dog. Not every dog wants to say hello, and not every owner appreciates an off-leash greeting.

☀️ And please… bring the poop bags. Nobody wants to end their beach day by stepping in a surprise 😅

Most importantly, have fun, be respectful, and help make the beach enjoyable for everyone!

Meet Cole 🐾

Cole is an 8-year-old Pit Bull, Dachshund, and Pug mix who struggles with severe resource guarding.

He guards almost anything placed or dropped on the ground—especially food. In fact, he even begins guarding the rewards he receives for good behavior.

When guarding, Cole targets the hands, legs, and feet of anyone who gets too close, including his owners. His biggest triggers include hands reaching in to reward him, the slightest foot movement, and even eye contact.

Cole's owners adopted him when he was around 5 years old. While they aren't certain what his past looked like, there have been signs that suggest possible abuse and neglect. They knew about his behavioral challenges when they adopted him, but because of his small size, getting professional help didn't seem as urgent at the time.

Over the years, Cole's resource guarding continued to escalate. Today, he has a multiple-person bite history across two states. As you can imagine, this has dramatically impacted his owners' daily lives. Having visitors over or finding someone to care for him while they travel has become incredibly difficult.

Because Cole has rehearsed these behaviors for years, behavior modification will require commitment, consistency, and patience. There are no quick fixes—but that doesn't mean progress isn't possible.

We're incredibly proud of both Cole and his owners for the progress they've already made. Every small win is a step toward a safer, more confident future.

Owning a dog with behavioral challenges isn't easy, and it isn't something to be ashamed of. With the right guidance, management, and training, progress is possible.

Vet visits don't have to be stressful, for you or your dog 🐾

Did you know we can help prepare your dog for veterinary visits?

We start with friendly, low-pressure visits designed to create positive associations with the veterinary environment. Beginning outside the facility and gradually working into the lobby and waiting area, we move at your dog's pace to build calm, confident behavior every step of the way.

As your dog becomes more comfortable, we may introduce common veterinary handling, equipment used during routine exams, and even veterinary technicians to help create positive experiences with new people and procedures.

Our goal is to help your dog feel safe and confident during veterinary visits while also ensuring the safety of the veterinary staff who care for them.

If your dog requires a muzzle for vet appointments, we strongly recommend muzzle training before it's needed. Only wearing a muzzle during stressful appointments can create negative associations and increase anxiety. When introduced properly, a muzzle becomes a valuable safety tool that provides confidence and peace of mind for everyone involved.

With patience, positive experiences, and the right training, vet visits can become much less stressful for everyone involved 🐶
