Wooli Duo

Wooli Duo is a duo centered around the pipa and percussion. Through improvisation and experimental performance, they reinterpret the possibilities of traditional instruments.

The visual concept of album is based on “sonic trajectories and landscapes,” translating musical movement into lines and strokes. Through calligraphic references, digital reconstruction, and ink-based collage, typography evolves into fluid, totem-like forms. A white foil stamping “WOOLI DUO” logotype is placed at the center, while the Chinese characters “無理” extend across the surface in full black foil stamping. The juxtaposition of English and Chinese creates a distinct visual identity and a dialogue between cultures.

Turquoise is chosen as the primary color to reflect both the musical character and its cultural context. It connects traditional visual languages from Taiwan and Korea, while also referencing the oxidized copper tones found in European architecture. These layered references reflect the cross-regional backgrounds and cultural contexts of the musicians.

The overall composition forms an evolving “sonic landscape,” where motion, layering, and tension coexist. The visual system captures the experimental and open qualities present in Wooli Duo’s music.

WOOLI DUO (TW/NO)
Thursday 3/9 21.30
Playhouse Valand

We have three amazing bands playing on Thursday the 3rd of September at Playhouse Valand! The second band announced is presented by MCV - Musikcentrum Väst, a close partner to GAC through many years.

WOOLI / 無理 / 우리 is an avant-garde folk duo formed by Taiwanese pipa player Fan-Qi Wu and Norwegian drummer Michael Lee Sørenmo.

WOOLI DUO explores the endless possibilities of sound through extensive improvisational interplay between pipa and percussion. Drawing inspiration from East Asian traditional music and rooted in the spirit of avant-garde folk, their music is shaped through improvisation, real-time dialogue, and a shared curiosity for sound.
Wooli Duo reinterpret and engage with tradition not as a fixed form but as an ever-changing force, embracing the unique sound texture and soundscape of music, a fluid, organic musical language of their own.

Since their debut in Oslo in April 2024, the duo has performed across Europe at festivals such as Aarhus Jazz Festival, Vestafor Festival, Babel Sound Festival, and (s)Nodi Festival. Their first album is currently in development and is scheduled for release in 2026.
